You can get a dimmable ballast if you plan to start small. 600w hydrofarm phantom ballast can be dimmed from 60% to 75% to 100%. So you can run the 600w on 60% which is like 360w. Then if you ever want to upgrade, you dont have to buy a new ballast.

if you're running a SOG, you dont need a lot of penetration. you can get away with using a 600w and keeping it a bit closer

the brand hydrion makes rolls of litmus paper that are used to test certain ranges of pH. They'll get the job done if you cant afford a proper pH pen. And if you are going to buy pH stuff online, might as well buy nutrients, too. CNS17 is pretty cheap. GH 3part is good too.
