As a general rule if you remove roots you should remove some foilage as well. Helps compensate for the limited water uptake from the smaller root mass by limiting some water loss in the leaves. Good luck

My advice would be to gain some knowledge through reading, classes, growing experience. It can be as hard as you want to make it but some underlying knowledge helps a lot. Right now you're getting growing experience. Grow some house plants too. Don't feed it too much and don't over water.
