This is always a problem and I feel your pain. The box will say if they light is soft white, cool white, day lighte etc... soft white is what you want for flowering, more reddish light. cool white and day light bulbs put out more light towards the blue end of the spectrum.

I was wondering this myself. Isn't the comparison of the cfl to the HPS somewhat of a mismatch? I would be interested to see how the cfls would match up against the HPS if there were 6 x 42 watt cfls. Either way, great little experiment. I'm very interested to see the end result.

Check out lights at High Tech Garden Supply you can find a brand new 400 watt hps system for $119. Also, if you can't use an HID light you can get really cheap T5 fixture with T5 bulbs included. They are actually more efficient than cfls. I got a 2' 8 bulb T5 fixture with bulbs included for $185!
