Hps is the way to go. But speaking with experience I like florescent lighting. First off they are much cooler and you can put it within 2" from the plants. That keeps them from stretching and toppling over. A 4' T5 would work perfect for that kind of space. If you do decide to go with a Hps...

How much space are you talking? You need to consider that Hps lights put out some heat. Have you thought about going with florescent lights? I use a T-5 4' 4 tube mix spectrum H.O. You can get close to the plants. It seems to do the trick for me. Not to mention a little cheaper.
