Howdy, I'm a bit confused on how to calculate ducting.. Where can I go for help?

Is drainage necessary or can I just use the right amount of water? Should I put an inch or two of gravel or something at the bottom? Oh, and what is the right amount of water to give a plant in a 2 gallon pot? And then how often should I go about doing that? once or twice a week? Help me out...

Its 2x4. I was planning on hanging the bulbs in the center or so to be right over the plants (on a 4-way splitter) So I'm set on lights? yay

I was just over at a friends house and he's got like three plants all under a foot high, all budding.. He doesn't use any lights or ventilation.. He just puts them in his window.. How the hell are they even alive? And how do I keep my plants short like he dose? Any help appreciated
