Sounds like you should get some proper nutes. Your pal might be a fine grower but you would do well to learn about this kind of thing yourself. The 80W isn't enough light for a decent harvest in my opinion. I would add a few 42W CFL bulbs.

I would use the 600 for flowering and the 400 for veg.

Maybe I'm reading that last pic wrong but it appears that you have a 400W ballast. Don't think a more powerful bulb would work.

Wouldn't hurt to remove the bulb and screw it in again, maybe it's not completely secure now. I only say that because it happened to me before. Regarding your potential plan, I think you'd be better served using two 600w lights.

They come with a ballast and they screw into a standard light socket, not the shop light ballast you have.

CFL's are relatively cheap. The 42w bulbs run around $10. 3-4 of those would really help. I believe they sell 'em at Home Depot.

Can't say for sure but I know it's cheaper to buy a new bulb to test than a new ballast. You might want to try that first, hopefully that'll do it.
