    Soil could be burning them up. Could be over watering. Could be under watering. Soil change. Water must be able to drain. Water about a half cup every other day.

    LST- Depends on how short you want your first bend. Lighting- One 40 watt cfl is not adequate. I see some stretching. I grabbed a 200 a while back and it did well up to the 10 inch mark, then started stretching. I recommend 4 150s to 200s. I would have a socket spliter on the top and one on...

    Pics would help. Some plants stems are purple do to genetics. But the problem seems to be more than that by what you described. Without pics I want to say you are dealing with a magnesium deficiency.
