I just got a used Foodsaver Vac550 on ebay for this very purpose for $30 and a roll of bags for $10. I haven't actually packaged anything with it yet, but the test runs worked great. Get a model that allows you to use a continuous roll of bags.

Yes you can use acetone and just set it out to evaporate. I prefer acetone because it's fast. My method is similar to what Finshaggy describes. I use a double boiler on the stove. The burner is definitely hot enough to serve as an ignition point. I open doors and windows and set a fan to blow...
