Red/purple stems means temperature too high/low. drastic temp swings will cause red/perple stems. not deficiency.

Milk my friend, milk. fat free milk controls PM. 3 parts water to 1 part milk, spray the plants down. you'll have to do it about once a week but it will control the PM. i speak from experience, actually using right now.

Use fat free milk, spray your plants thourouly with 3 parts water/1 part milk. that one is a goner but milk has antifungal properties in it. it will keep the mildew at bay. for future reference....... i spray mine once a week, the plants love it too.

I agree with Johnou833, coco is the best for first timers. i use GH coco with great results, and its more like hydro than soil so you'll have faster growth rate and larger plants...... they love it.

The more light intensity the better, otherwise you are wasting your time. i started with 20 of the 23 watt/100 watt cfl replacement bulbs and was not satisfied with the result so i switched to 150 hps. works great and actually uses less wattage. just something to think about.

I think you may be a bit high. The light from the christmas light string is not intense enough to penatrate the canopy, it woulld be useful as supplimental lighting but i would not rely on it for primary lighting. your best bet, especially since your getting a grow tent would be to do it...

you should lower the temp, but i have grown in the 90's with no issues. too much heat will cause hermies. better safe than sorry.
