Well I personally have never used one. I kind of wing it there. It might be a good idea but if you don't over feed and change the res often you should always be in the ball park. I have been growing since the 70's without all this new fancy stuff that is out there now days. I just don't see any...
I have owned several PH meters. Cheap ones and mid range ones. I just never had any luck keeping them working correctly. I now use the liquid and love it. Much easier to use and I know what color I want . I'd keep my cash in my wallet and get used to the liquid. Correcting PH is not any easier...
When I look at your pics this is what I see from my experience. 1. I'm betting that your room temps are well above 80* 2. Looks like a bit of mag deficiency. 3. Probably over watered.
Looks like the leaves on the one are toast. Nothing going to help that one and if you only have 2 weeks to harvest I would not worry about it. It's too late. the other one my benefit from a folar application 1 tablespoon epsom salt per gal.

I have found that the key to no root rot is mainly res temp. keep it under 70* and I also use aquasheild every time I do a res change or top off. Keep room temp under 80* res temp under 70* and most growing problems go away

this thread is good entertainment. WTF is a test grow?Well wait a min. Every one of my grows is a test grow. I'm always testing something usually I'm testing the taste of my buds not my tomatoes. LOL
I would put them on a timer. I run a Aero flo ripoff home built. I run my pump 30 min on 1`/2 hrs off. Works for me. gives things a chance to dry out and get some air. I don't know just what i do. I know rockwool holds a lot of water for a longer time than you would think.
