Thanks for that. It matches my own suspicion. I've flipped a couple of the pots upside-down and lifted the pot for a look, and I can see that the roots have reached the sides and bottom of the pot in each case. I've let the pots dry right out now, and I'm just watering with tiny amounts now...

Hi Luke, Thanks for chipping in. I'm sure those self watering pots will suit someone, but I'm sold on the benefits of smart pots, which prune the roots of growing plants, among other things. Tweaking a timer on a watering system won't be hard.
