I would try using UC roots on that. It looks like you have goo there and you don't want that. I also agree that plant is too small for DWC. I think you'll have a rough time and very slow start.

How bad is a little algae on the top? I have always ignored it. I get it on the hydroton and rockwool. I tried putting a plate but it was a pain for me to do my regular checkups. I have a plan for covering that for next cycle but should I take it more seriously right away?
