After a 12 hour soak in water, I place them in the hydroton in the net pot they'll spend their entire life in. Can't get any more straightforward and simple than that.

If you're feeling experimental... Try letting the hydroton dry out before soaking and pH adjusting. Otherwise, maybe just go a bad batch of hydroton if you're confident you've eliminated other variables besides the hydroton.

You're fine, the plant is fine. Those are just root hairs which are normal/healthy. Growing in DWC, root hairs are usually lost in the solution. Aero system users love seeing the root hairs though. https://www.cannagardening.com/roots_and_root_hairs...

Personally I think I'd go more with dimming to control the heat vs turning the lights off and on totally. That said, I doubt doing either or both causes any real stress during vegetative growth (different story if we're talking about interrupting darkness during flowering with light). Outdoors...

Why are you wanting to use an aquarium? Curious what your motivation is. Would probably be better off selling the aquarium and using the proceeds to get set up with something better for trying a micro grow? The light at 12.8 watts isn't going to get the plant very far past the seedling stage...

Well if the nutrient solution mix is weak (and I think you mentioned your plants are young?), the water isn't going to have much in the way of buffers. And for what it does have, and for the medium being neutral'ish in pH, it would be normal for the pH to drift back towards neutral.
