  • Hey Supra I have been reading a bit about DIY LEDS, but am a little overwhelmed by it all. I don't have much knowledge on electricity, so don't really understand how to match the LEDS to the drivers (power supply?). I am currently using two 600w HPS bulbs and would like to make the switch over to LEDs in the 1200w range or close to it. Can you steer me in the right direction to get me started.

    The cost of the Mars per PAR W is actually higher than the cost of the Optic Lights. The generic emitters are low efficiency and low quality. The can literally burn out and may be improperly cooled. The efficiency of the drivers is unknown.

    If start up cost is an issue and you want bang for the buck, check out the double ended HPS it is very hard to beat and very cheap.

    I am definitely interested in switching to LED. If I can can get the leds and drivers for around $1200 thats not to ridiculous. I plan on using my HPS 1-2 more cycles before I switch over. so I could order a little at a time.
    I went ahead and bought 6 CXB3590 72v CB bins with 80° lenses, will order drivers if you think my Chinese led driver I bought for 3 watt diodes, it puts out 75v and 570ma (label says 680ma) won't be efficient. In that case what driver should I use for my 4.5 sq.ft cabinets. Heat is a problem for me current isn't.

    Then you have PAR W reaching the canopy. Divide that by the square footage the light is covering. Now you have PAR W/ft².

    Multiply that by the umol/s/W for that particular color temp (see Aleshes awesome chart)

    Finally, multiply that by 10.7 to convert from ft² to m² and you have PPFD averaged for that space

    Thanks a lot SupraSPL for that detailed explanation. IF I could get 1gpw with this light design I would run then all at 23w and buy a dozen more cobs for better efficiency. I will put a link to my DIY once the cobs arrive.

    I went through all journals that follow your system and found out you suggesting that you would go 35w per sq.ft for some dense buds on December 2014,.So that makes two cobs @ 75w per 4.5sq.ft cab. if think i could better the efficiency with different setup please let me know.     I would consider the possibility that they will not not have it. In my experience they either have it in stock now or they almost never will LOL

    That said, I suspect the high CRi would be be several bins lower and maybe more expensive.

    One More Question SupraSPL, I have 6 Chinese LED drivers putting 70v and 560ma , Can I use it to power six 3590's to get 6 39.2w cobs ? 3 in each 4.5sq.ft CAB. What will be my PPFD ? The efficiency Chart says i am @ about 50%, But I wanna Know the PPFD when I use 3cobs @39.2w in 4.5sq.ft . BAsed on the PPFD I will order my Cobs, Thank you very much in Advance

    It might work if the driver can actually put out a bit above 70V but the current output might decrease a bit.

    I love your cob style, I decided to change my red blue 3w led to COB, my cab is small two 4.5 sq.ft . I think i will go with the cxa3590 running @49.7% with a maxwell driver powering two cobs @ 72v, 1.05A. I couldn't decide how many cobs will I need Per 4.5 sq.ft Cabinet is there a thumb rule or calculation to determine it? Thank you very much for your time

    That driver maxes out at 108V and your COBs probably need 117V so you might only get 700mA out of that driver. You could use the HLG-185H-C1400 which maxes out at 143V.

    My heat sink size are L 13.77" x w 5.94". Planning to run 2 cxb3590 @ 700ma each. Wondering about the fans, should I just use 1 8" fan, or two separate 6" fans on the heatsink?

    I would suggest a single 140mm fan in the center, blowing into the heatsink and running at 5-6V.

    I run 4 x CXA3590 72 W/HLG-185-C700B with a 100k pot. Is it safe to dim it all the way down?

    I believe we are supposed to stay above 10% so some people add a 10K resistor along with the pot to achieve that. Out of curiosity, does the driver put out the full 700mA to 4 CXA3590s? I figured it would require 291V and the driver is 286-287 max?

    How do I find that out? I know that when I max the pot, the voltage is @ 286V. I'm not sure if it is putting out the full 700mA, because the light don't look bright as before... or maybe my eyes have just adjusted too them. I will build another one, but a CXB3590 72V 3000k instead. My next build is 8 cxb3590 with 2 hlg @ 700mA. Figured i could put 2 cobs on these heatsinks, instead of 1.

    is it better to use ONE LPC-35-700 per each of EIGHT cree CXB3070-0000-000N0HAB30G
    or ONE 60-1400 per each of SIX cree?
    or ONE HLG-185H-C1400B for FOUR cree?

    THNX man, If you ran them at 1.4A that would be some pretty high intensity 957 PPFD averaged. Might as well crank it as long as your fert system can keep them fed, air system can handle the heat and keep canopy temps in a healthy range.

    I would recommend the HLG over the LPC by far. Less heat and the dimmable option could be very useful. Good luck!

    If the drivers were fullly loaded, you could run 9-10 of them safely on a 120V 20A dedicated circuit.

    hi buddy. I'm trying to figure out which activ cooled cpu heatsink hittin the 25-30$ mark could hold 1cxb or similar chip running at 80-100W each. iḿ just trying to pair 6 pieces with an hps600 next winter, yay^
    btw iḿ aiming for 478 socket, or bigger one

    Hey Supra, just like to let you know. I finally got 4x cxa3590 running on the HLG-185-C700B with a 100k pot. Haven't used a multi meter yet. Light in a 1x5, temps inside 26-30degrees. Heatsink temps range at 29-35degrees. Im using a IR gun to check the temps, but where do I aim the laser at to check the temp? Anywhere on the H/S or near the cob holder or on it?

    Also, the wires that you solder onto the cobs, can be used on the holders.. just twist them and it will go in and lock.

    I would look for the hottest part of the heatsink that is not affected by the photon output. In between the fins behind the COB for example.

    Cob diy is what I'm aiming to do with the cra 3590s. So is it better to have individual drivers or one for all? Also,matter driver the. What? aC to dc conversion? How does this happen?

    Yep 36V class, 34.9 Vf @ 1.4A. Max current is 3.6A. The A version of the driver has built in dimming screw. The B version uses an external 100K potentiometer for dimming.

    Looks like the 3070 are almost half the cost of the 3590? What is the best investment?
    Please verify my choices in drivers. I plan on running (4) cxa 3070 z2 off of (1) Hlg-120h-c1400b and (4) cxa3590 cb50 off of (1)hlg-185h-c700b. Are these an appropriate match? Your expertise is much appreciated

    Your second example, (4) CXA3590 72V class on (1) HLG-185H-C700 would probably not work well, you may get only 600mA out of it once it all warms up. You could use (4) CXB3590 72V class though. Good luck!

    You mean (4) 3590 36v would work? What do you think of HLG-185H-C1050a? Would these run (4) 3070 or (4)3590 36v? I am lighting a 12'x40" Scrog with (3) units of (4)3070 and (4)3590 36v on a light mover. I think I want to push them harder than 700mA. Someone suggested that (8)@1400mA might be overdoing it.

    I've already received everything but drivers. (3) 10x24 heatsinks from Heatsinkusa. Based off Realstyles 6th build. I know he's running 700mA but I think I want a little more power.
    My space is 3.4ft by 2 ft. I have a CNC machine to make the body of the lamp from aluminium. Do you think 600W would be pushing it?
    I would like to hit 2000umol or thereabouts... Cheers!

    Yes that is 88W/ft² and depending on efficiency, 1700PPFD average with some hot spots as high as 2000 PPFD. That intensity might kill the plants by bleaching them but it would be an interesting experiment.
    Hello Supra, I have a project to make a 400w LED creed 3590. Can you please give me some tips on drivers and how to power them to extract something like a 1000HPS. It is just a flower light so i think 2700K or 3k maybe? Thanks in advance.

    Yes something from 3000-4000K would work well. To get the job done with only 400 dissipation W you will need some very high efficiency but it can be done.

Can you please tell me how to assemble the lamp? what thermal paste to use? then just tape it down with kapton? dont have possibility to drill the cpu coolers im affraid. Regards.
