Is 463 "Likes" A Lot?

This month marks 6 years for me as a RIU contributor. I'm curious if most readers notice how long someone has been a member when judging their advice. I'm surprised such a high percentage of "growers" here didn't become members until 2012 or 2013. Do you guys take into consideration a members' time on the boards? How do you decide who to pay attention to and who to ignore? Do you check their feedback and numbers before weighing the advice they give? Just curious as to how I could increase my credibility and therefore my ability to help. Any suggestions? BigSteve.

Lol you gave 1 like.

I just listen to what they say. couple other things can factor in there too, like how their grow looks like, you could even look at what else they have been blabbin about in their recent posts.

Personally I give advice based on my own experience or literature that I've read.

I've been a member since 2010 and I have 2576 likes received with 515 likes given.

I find most people take notice of what more knowledgable people say when they look back at their previous threads and journals etc to see that they are actually doing what they claim.

One thing that constantly sticks in my mind about you BigSteve is that you only flower for 6weeks.

In 4 years of growing I've never found anything that's done in 6weeks.

I could chop at 6 weeks to sell it, if I didn't give a fuck about it.

I've currently got another fast finishing DINAFEM CRITICAL+ getting chopped tomorrow at day 59 of 12/12.

I find as many different answers as possible and find the one that's most agreed upon. Plus my personal research. Gather info from as many available sources possible then look for the "common thread".

Post cound doesnt mean anything for a member neither do likes or likes given. A number cant show someones true knowledge on a place like this. A lot of people get likes for tons non related grow stuff.

I don't go by likes or post count or join date or any of that. .. someone could be growing for 20 years and just signed up to riu yesterday..
I feel if.you're around enough and read enough peoples posts, you can quickly get an idea of who has a clue as to wtf they're talking about though..
Also, nobody is.right 100% of the time, so you always need to take all advice with a grain of salt and do some research on your own..

Exactly every time I tell somebody something such as go reseach it lazy ass they try to call me a dick and say they know more then I do. Then why the fuck are u asking such an easy question. Then they try to pull the (oh dannoo93 thinks he big guy cuz he has posts and tries to be a dick) no thats just how I am. Dont let people judge u by ur posts or membership length

likes on RUI are given out like candy on Halloween.

Nobody has a perfect setup and no one does it exactly right. I read everything I can and take it from there. nothing i read ANYWHERE is set in stone.

I'm pretty sure some of the legends and highly respectable regulars aren't right all the time, in fact I'm 100% sure...
thing is some of the more legendary posters say less BS than others and speak from experience even if its a lil off...

most people just parrot stuff they heard.... so I "like" mostly original quips..
BTW, WTF is that green indicator bar underneath the name for? I see some peoples are long or short independent of post count or longevity or likes

The green bars you are on about are reputation points which are another form of "likes".

When I first joined RIU the green bars at that time meant the user had knowledge.

Mainly because at that time people didn't dish out rep for funny jokes etc.

They gave you rep for your answers or for your own grow threads etc.

bigsteve:

I see some people with huge post counts in a short duration of time (months) and some have low a post count within a long time frame (several years), so post count and seniority do not necessarily coincide. Often the age of the poster can make a difference as the younger generation seems to be more post happy than us who were growing pot in the 70's by reading our high-times magazines. Personally I go by the content of the post and pic's that tell no lies.
Dr. Jekyll

It doesn't matter how many posts you have, or how long you have been a member, it's all about how you deliver the message. Uncle Ben may have a lot of knowledge, but he can be an asshole at times. As previously stated, nobody knows it all as every situation is different and we should be constantly learning new techniques and ideas. So becoming a post whore ain't going to buy you respect from me

I am no expert and grow decently. You have to take everything with a grain of salt. I will google search for a day or two search forums etc for similiar problems as mine. If I dont have a def answer after my own searching I will make a thread ask a question pertaining to my problem. sometimes alot of people comment sometimes only a few comment sometimes its just assholes making smart ass comments etc. If people are
having a smiliar problem for example the newbie section has prob 40 people a day asking whats wrong w my plants. 20 people say ph is off, 1 says you suck read more, 3 says to much nutes. The most common answer is ph. So you check and adjust ph if needed. Then while you check your run off you check ppm's at same time so good ph but have 3000ppm runoff. So you flush or what not. So there ya go its all trial and error everyone is different so likes, rep points post count, etc mean nothin I joined I think sept this year and have grown for a handful of years. I may not be a smart as "experts" but them exoerts dont no every situation and scenario. Give the best and most accurate advise and thats all you can do. Learn from your mistakes and others and get better

Confession time -- until just now I didn't know how to leave a "like". When I see a comment I endorse I have usually said something to the effect of "good question...". Now that I know what to do I will start handing out likes to appropriate posters. Never too old to learn. BigSteve.

Glad you have learnt how to send a "like", as it may help with your desire to increase your credibility, and also explains the drastic difference between your "likes" sent & received
Dr. Jekyll

So it only took you 6 years to figure out the "like" button and now you want to increase your credibility, sorry buddy but it just went down the toilet.
How about "rep points" or "report post" and all those other numerous icons, do you understand any of them?
