Just planted seeds last night. First indoor grow.

So, last night I planted 5 white widow seeds for my first indoor grow. I am using a 4x4 grow tent, 600watt HPS and an exhaust fan with carbon filter.

I watered the dirt (ff ocean forest), let the excess water run off, heated the dirt for an hour, planted approx 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch deep, and then put the bottom half of a 2 liter bottle over the seed area for humidity. The light is about 2 to 2 and 1/2 feet above the 5 gallon buckets I used as planters. The dirt feels very slightly warm to the touch.

My temp is setting at about 73 degrees (f) and humidity seems to be in the low 50's. I am hoping to see sprouts in 2-4 days.

Any thoughts or helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am about as nervous as a new parent.

Thanks in advance.

Planted too deep in the wrong soil. otherwise you have a good start. You should be starting with bagseed, but it isn't much of a loss. Your pot is a little large, if you don't have any drain holes, you're going to have over watering issues right off. Roots don't like light, so those pots have to go. Get some 4"x4"x4" starting pots and some soil designed for seedlings.FFOF is way too hot for seedlings and clones. Your light is way too far away. The temperature at the plant should never exceed 85*F. Adjust your light height that way. I have a 400 in a cool tube, and my plants are never more than 7-8" away. The 1,000 watt keeps them about a foot or so away from the bulb.

I do have the drainage holes, and i lowered the light. Probably stuck with the soil, but what about getting dark buckets and putting the white ones inside them just to salvage this grow? What soil do you reccomend? Disappointed as a few people suggested this soil. Even though too deep, they should still come up though right?

So far I have 2 little babies that have poked their heads through the dirt. Temp is sitting right around a steady 82 (f) and I put in a warm mist humidifier as the humidity was low. Watered today as the top inch or so of soil had gotten fairly dry. I used one gallon of distilled water over 5 plants and the soil feels moist again. Not sure if that was the right amount of water or not.

1. germinate seeds in wet paper dark place. 4-6 days (not all seeds pop) 2. poke soil with pinky about nail deep and just cover with a lil soil. 3. i wouldnt use a big bucket to start it slows foliage growth, small cup 1st when roots grow into that i transfer to whatever size pot i need. 4. turn off your lights the plants dont need light til you see leaves to make use of the light

They can grow just fine in FFOF soil. I hear often about it burning seedlings but never once have I had that be the case. Nor have you planted them too deep as you have now found out if they have broken through the soil. Hooray for you they are born ! Pass some cigars.
Only thing I wouldnt do is expose them to a 600 watt light quite so soon but thats just me. I let my babies snuggle up to some harmless CFL's for a little while before I hit them with that kind of power.
Happy growing to ya fella !!

take your sprouts and put them in a solo cup or something till they get a little bigger, the problem you`re gonna have with the buckets at first is under watering. as for roots not liking light, well in soil they`re not gonna see the light and i`ve been growing dwc in white buckets for years with no problems from the buckets. so do what you want there. the one biggest piece of advise i can give you is, whatever you read on here pay attention to who it`s coming from! 1/2 of what you read is gonna be total bull shit..

DO NOT move your sprouts to another smaller container at this time the tiny roots that have already formed will be damaged and it will stunt or kill your seedling. Growth may be slow as the roots form but will rapidly take off once they do far surpassing those transplanted from solo cups after they are rootbound. Also leave them under the HID as this will also give them a jump start. Here are pictures of my latest seedlings at 9 and 14 days under 1000W HID from sprout.

if they are just sprouted and you can`t get them out without busting up roots you need a new hobby. i`ve taken them out of pots when they were a bigger, rinsed off the dirt and slammed them in water with no ill effects. and your other theory about roots and transplanting, i`m sure there are a ton of dirt growers that will disagree with that.
