I thought Shantibaba created White Widow when he was business partners with Arjan of Greenhouse Seeds and after the two split up Arjan continued to sell the strain from his seedbank as Shantibaba had sold him his share in the company and went on to create the Mr. Nice Seedbank, where he continued to release the White Widow under the name Black Widow as the former was being marketed by Arjan.

The only thing I say for sure about any of those strains , is that NL is an easy to grow, high yielding plant with high pest resistance and low odor. I seen 15'+ers outdoors. Average to upbove average potentcy.

yes, you are correct, shanti created ww when he was with greenhouse, but according to shanti, he took all of his plant stock with him when he left ghsc to go and start up mr nice with neville shoenbacher, and claims that either arjan bought a pack of mr nice's black widow, and got his seeds that way, or who knows what the other options are..
depends on whom you believe of course, shanti, or arjan, as to which story you believe.. i tend to side with shanti, but obviously i wasn't there to know the true story..

Well whatever Arjan did I'm sure it was sketchy as he is obviously money minded and a business man through and through. While Shanti and Neville are truly incredible breeders and it shows through their Mr. Nice seedbank. I would trust their seeds over Arjan and Franco anyday.

I watch vice all the time and I am even more proud to be a member of this site knowing that a moderator's spot on analysis of Arjan's doucheness was included in "King of Cannabis". Isn't that name stolen by Arjan from Neville? Anyway, I am gonna hit you with some rep for that one. Keep on telling it like it is.

I saw that too, and was peeing myself laughing after I saw it. I like how your Powell-Peralta logo made it into the Vice video.

Anyway, that Vice video didn't really go into WHY people dislike Arjan so much; they just mentioned that he's a polarizing figure that some people don't like. I can see why they didn't; it would be pretty obnoxious to slag a guy after he lets you stay with his crew, travel with him, and shoot your movie, and it would sort of defeat the entire purpose of their little documentary. But I think the end result is that the Vice piece lionizes Roskam.

Pretty clearly, Roskam is a successful businessman, but IMO the (overlooked) fact that he had two of his many High Times Magazine Cannabis cups revoked for bribing judges says all you really need to know about the guy's ethics.

Anyway, back on the original question, fire alien urkle is a cross of two heavyweights and should be great. Without getting into its pedigree, the pre-98 Bubba is a "clone only" strain, so the best (perhaps only) version of this has to be found as a clone, not se-ed. That one is a really potent "couchlock" strong indica that will make you "stupid" and turn you into jelly. Some people like that, some don't.

On Northern Lights and White Widow, each one of those two strains goes back 20 years as famous Dutch award-winning strains. Consequently, there are at least a dozen version of each one out now, by different breeders, and not only are they not the same, in some cases they are substantially different, with questionable genetic connection to the originals. So with these two, it matters which one you choose to grow. . .a LOT. A *good* Northern lights should be excellent, as good as many of the modern "super" kush strains, but a bad one could be pretty lousy, and ditto for White Widow.

This thread has some fairly good discussion about Northern Lights: https://www.rollitup.org/seed-strain-reviews/601395-breeder-has-true-nl-5-a.html

Note that some believe that NONE of the current versions of Northern lights are as good as the line from the early 1990s that cemented its reputation.

That's basically Arjan Roskam's side of the story. Scott "Shantibaba" Blakely claims that when he left Greenhouse he took all his genetics with him, and that Arjan (who isn't actually a breeder himself) had to reconstitute all of his lines (not just Widow) from F2s and/or other people's versions of his former genetics.

You can read a fairly good article on this "controversy" here: http://www.seedsman.com/en/origins-of-white-widow/

I can definitely see the appeal, if only based on reputation, but IMO, White Widow is somewhat overrated anyway. It made a huge stir in the early 90s as one of the earliest super-frosty strains, and cemented its international reputation with a High Times magazine cup win in Holland. Its not that the strain isn't good, just that nowadays there are any number of others on the market that are just as frosty-looking, better tasting, and equally (or more) potent.

I read that article and if it's correct that is sad and it is totally weak to bribe the judges :-(
There are definitely just as if not more frosty strains out now but I prefer the older genetics, they tend to be less anxiety inducing in my opinion.
