RDWC purchase or build out?

Hey guys,

I've recently upgraded most of my gear, including a new tent(5x5 Gorrilla Tent). Now here's where I'm stuck. I'm moving away from soil and moving into DWC but I would prefer a RDWC as I'm trying to run more automated and make things simpler in terms of just working out of a reservoir for mute changes and topping off.

My question: My hydro shop suggested a undercurrent system which cost like $1k for a 6 bucket system. Isn't there a cheaper way/option? I'm not the most handy dude but I may be thinking of rigging one myself but honestly I'd like to avoid this!

What have some of you guys implemented for RDWC?

Thanks!

With a store bought system you don't have to worry about leaks vs building your own leaks are more highly. Store bought cost more vs building your own. It takes mor time to build one vs buying one for the store. This is just my two cents. I would go with a rdwc kit wich would be cheaper vs the under current and I don't think you would yield more out of the undercurrent vs dwc. For your 5x5 gorilla tent I would go with a 6 site rdwc setup and if possible keep your res outside the tent. Good luck.....btw a rdwc kit should be half the price of the under current system.

Well in my opinion you should build your own, use something with flat sides like rubbermade totes these are less likely to leak at the joints. In a 5x5 I would run 2 plants with the reservoir outside(you won't have room inside), set up a SCROG and grow 2 monsters. There's a guy on youtube that uses this method and gets giant yields.

I'm going to look into the RDwC kit. Didn't even know that was an option. All I'm looking for is an easy way to manage 6 buckets without having to manually open each bucket and top off, feed, etc. Saw a lot of DWC users work off of just a REs and that's what I'd like.

Krabby thank you for the suggestions and I got your PM. Right now I'm planning on doing a perpetual grow as I do have patients, and need to run shorter veg times. My last grow had monsters but I verged for a while.

I just built out a system nearly identical to the Undercurrent 6XL - 8gal / 25" centers - I modified it for I can reverse the pump flow for changing
out nutrients, and added an extrernal gravity fed top-off res. Granted I had air pumps already and a few other parts, but it cost me FAR LESS to
build.

I finished it this morning and have been letting it run for the last 4 hours, and no leaks.

In a 5x5 I'd say go with a 5 bucket - 4 5gals + 1 control bucket. I ran one of these with 1.5" piping and
grommets/bulkheads at the hydro store I worked for, and there was plenty of space for 4 large plants.
