Delusional people see the world through their 'minds eye'

Beliefs are shaped by perception, but a new study shows that delusional people -people who hold unfounded, tightly held beliefs- shape their perception from their beliefs.

Basically, delusional people are ass backwards when it comes to how they come to, and hold their, beliefs.

http://www.livescience.com/39038-how-delusions-shape-perception.html

"Beliefs form in order to minimize our surprise about the world," said neuroscientist Phil Corlett of Yale University in New Haven, Conn., who was not involved in the study. "Our expectations override what we actually see," Corlett added.

This makes perfect sense to me when I look at people involved in religion. Someone tells them what they should believe. They develop these delusions because of the dogma. So their perception of the universe becomes distorted. They see things according to the way their religion says they should see things. This makes it easier than making up your own mind about what you see.

Its funny how delusionals attempt to predict things based off of beliefs.Makes me wonder how many of those biblical prophets actualy knew that they were full of shit,,but went on predicting and soothsaying to the common folk at any rate.I also find it entertaining that everyone who has ever made a prediction about when the end times are suppose to happen have been wrong.Interesting article though BB.

I think everyone shapes their reality around what we see or want to see.
In this case, peoples perception is modified specifically with regards to unfounded beliefs.

Everyone has confirmation bias to an extent, but delusional people can negate evidence in its entirety when it's contradictory to their beliefs.

Even more bizarre is that a lot of the failed end-of-times predictions end up increasing the followers' faith. How the fuck does that work?

well,,,Ya know,I cant even pretend to explain that sort of circle jerk, yet I have an idea that maybe they would write it off with the false prophet card in that case. One would figure or at leaste someone with a semi-logical thought process, ,that once they see something in which their faith has been revealed as flawed and on a blatant level,,,that maybe some questions would start to seep into the bubblelusion.

WTF would an animal who can sense slightly more of their universe than a bananna slug know about reality?

While our senses may be limited, our ability to invent equipment that is far more sensitive than any animals senses, gives us insight far beyond that of any other species.

Banana slugs can't view atoms, or view quarks/bosons, or use microwaves, or detect background cosmic radiation, or "insert virtually any of mankind's achievements here". We are by far, the most evolutionary advanced species that we know of, bar none.

I also think the hypocrisy of your comment is astounding. You, one of these animals with sense only slightly better than a banana slug is claiming to know all kinds of revealed truths.... it's ironic that your argument is that we don't know anything, but yet you claim to have the answers.

All this is like the alien debate (s). I don't believe in religion, god etc, but I do believe there are aliens. Why? Well it would be pretty small minded to think otherwise. I mean, look at space exploration. We though we would/should have reached the end of the universe by now but it keeps going, expanding into a never-ending vast of crowded "space."
What if there's another planet with "people" like us at aroumd the same level of scientific and engineering breakthroughs? Never know which means we shouldn't stop looking.
Its said that those that believe in god or religion are smarter than those that do, so wouldn't it be ignorant of us NOT to believe another being is out there? Know what class of person has the most amount of ignorance? Racists of all colors. Know what most racists believe in? God. And lets face it, being racist in todays modern age is just plain dumb, and we know the type of person that fits the bill, how they look, how they act.
I don't believe were the only beings in existance of all the universe simply because it makes no sense...were not alone.

Their delusions manifest. Their dystopias come to reality. Their diseased world view creates real strife.

That is proof enough of the power of perception.

Conversely, it is impossible to consistently formulate the laws with out reference to consciousness.

God / Aliens

Sounds like:

(Pepsi / Coke)
(Red / Blue)
(Good / Bad)
(Day / Night)

etc

All of those things exist beyond how we have them opposed to each other. While all the arguing goes on, both sides of the dichotomy continue in their unity with each other. <---spin 'proper' :)

Pepsi and Coke are almost the same shit.

Red and blue are not diametrically opposed on a circular spectrum, Red and green are.

My point is, allowing for choice between "god" and "aliens" is indeed a false dichotomy. I say both notions are bullocks.

I agree with you, that no one ever told you exactly what to think... you made those decisions. But ironically, you made those decisions based on how you were raised by your parents and everyone else involved in your life, as well as all the experiences you have had since you were born. So if you really want to get deep, who you are... is merely what you have borrowed or decided to keep or leave from all of the people you have ever had an experience with in your life.

You think whatever you choose, but what you think... is not really what you have chosen... the choices you make are based on what you as an individual have gathered from other human animals throughout the course of your existence. If you were born in any other part of the world, you would be completely different.

It astounds me a lot of the times, how egotistical some people can be about knowing all these unknowable secrets of the universe, reality and spirituality... when the fact will always remain that if you were born in another country, most likely, you would have completely different answers to all the wonderful unanswered mysteries in our limited existence.

But most people... most people, when they have unanswered questions about spirituality, existence, our origin, god, an afterlife... instead of admitting they don't know those answers, ill give you one guess on how to resolve that conflict.........

You can make it up.

me: Hey Strife. Consciousness is conditioned by its environment. That seems clear enough to me. *Deep down 'who you are' is more like the environment that does the conditioning. Same but different, imo.

me: Agreed. But, that does not account for the spark of life that every culture reveres. If my mythology involved elephants or queen's of the universe it would seem to me that the core is unencumbered by description.

just about 90% of the populous: Why is spiritual knowledge egotistical? I think there's a logic thingamajigger you might want to follow on that statement. Just because some are nutjobs don't mean we all is.

You can make it up.
