I am starting this thread because there is a lot of miss information about oil (wax,shatter,decarb,winterized ect..)

This is for patients to learn what to look for when caregivers and compassion centers promote and sell dirty oil.

I will explain how to properly use this magical substance in a way that is light on the wallet.

Health Concerns

Butane is harmless at levels present in BHO and presents no adverse affects like lung damage or brain damage. Poorly purged butane tastes like metal, has a nasty bite usually burning the nose and crackles when ignited. Super critical Co2 extraction from my understanding is not the answer and has all sorts of issues( yield, quality, difficulty). From all my research butane seems to be the best solvent for taste, potency and all around use for an initial extraction. Hexane can be used many different ways but the best seems to be as a polishing tool after the initial extraction using butane. Hexane even at levels as low as 25 ppm tastes like gasoline and needs to be much lower to go unnoticed. Although these levels meet way below osha human toxicity levels, they still effect taste and ultimately the quality of the product. Another commonly used solvent is 95% ethanol which is primarily used for winterizing BHO and can leave a very dry bite at the back of the throat on the end of an exhale. If used correctly all of these solvents are 100% safe for human consumption.

When I fill my tank of butane using a can tapper and cans, I open the tank for a sec to let out the propellent that was in the cans which is propane.

I will get to glass tubes, but I do not use one and do not condone to use of them. They are very dangerous and unpredictable, I prefer a closed loop system made of stainless steel that will not corrode or leech any chemical into your precious gold.

The entire extraction process is done under a vacuum and is completely sealed.
I recover and reuse 100% of my butane.

Above is the msds for Vector butane. Which they are not required to list anything below 1% and non toxic. I use 7x but have been told lucienne 4x is still good to use. Bottom line if done correctly it is safe.

The quality of BHO varies based on quality of material, quality of solvents, temperature and the person making it. Oil is a direct reflection of the buds or trim used to make the oil. The older the material, the darker and more bland the taste. Freshly picked material that is processed immediately will taste the best by far, but at the cost of a drastic reduction in yield. Low temperature extractions preserve taste by not burning off simple terpenes and flavors, but pose a problem degassing or "purging" completely without a vacuum. WAX as pictured above is a crude extract and the first step in creating a pure polished absolute which is only cannabinoids all the other water solubles, wax and fats are removed. Wax coats the lungs and makes big dabs very unpleasant as gasping for air isn't fun. Shatter will turn to Wax in time if the waxes are not removed, at this state Shatter and Wax are the exact same thing. Both types of oil at this stage should be sold around here between 30-50 dollars a gram to medical patients which should have THC levels between 50 and 85 percent. If the BHO is more liquid, crackles when lit or has a harsh metal taste it is not good these are signs of poorly made BHO for vaporizing.

This was filtered out using a .4 micron vacuum filter. About 35 grams of Wax was filtered

What is left after filtered and purged off is the second step in polishing extracts. Which is much easier on the lungs, more potent and enjoyable to smoke than wax.

Looks awesome man. I've just in the last year started doing alcohol extractions. I don't have anywhere to work outside so I can't do butane. I've only extracted one of my strains so far, and all the product has turned out as a nice amber oil. I don't know if its staying oily because of the strain yet, or because of my process, but I don't taste any alcohol in it, and the flavor is very similar to the bud it came from so I think it might be the strain. I'm about to do another run with completely different material for the first time. Have you ever tried vac purging an alcohol extract? I'm curious if it might turn to a wax or shatter type consistency and be a little easier to handle then the oil. Nice glass piece too man, I almost bought one of these the other day

Right now I've just got a nice little add on for my phire bong that almost matchs the oil rig.

The best way I have found to remove alcohol is to let it evaporate (low heat)till the oil is thick(which might be where your at) then throw a thin layer in vac oven at 80 degrees at -29.5 hg until bubbles stop. Without a vacuum it is very difficult if not impossible to remove all the alcohol because it's boiling point is 170 degrees at which you would be ruining the taste of your oil. I am unsure at the amount of waxes picked up because you used alcohol as the primary extraction solvent so it is safe to say that if you remove all the alcohol at low temp you should end up with shatter. You are right on the verge of decaboxylation which would give you a consistent liquidy state that will never harden and for sure has lost flavor. A vacuum oven will fix this.

How much should a quality shatter cost and what should it test at?

Shatter that has not been polished, to patients from caregivers should be between 30-40 dollars a gram, I help one patient for 25 but you can't do this for everyone. Boston is selling between 60-75 a gram. I would expect it to test between 60 - 80 percent. 90 is rare right now.

I just want to say that this journey of understanding bho has been a nightmare, It took me a solid year of working at it to partially grasp what I know now and it still isn't that much. Everyday we learn something new.

Looking good dude, all valid points. One thing patients can all do is utilize Know Your Grow Lab's VOC ( Volatile Organic Compounds) Testing service. This way, you can verify even if its your own oil, that it is under 5 ppm, as Wavegem said, is WELL BELOW what is accepted as safe operating conditions for breathing air. We use this service at Slater, and can be confident in providing quality oils to the patient base even when using sealed systems with vacuum ovens and lab conditions. Keep up the good work fucker.

I'm in the unfortunate position of not having an outdoor area suitable for extraction. Wavegem: What would someone look for in compensation for running product?

I guess what I'm asking is, what would be reasonable (not offensive) to offer someone for using their extractor and expertise?

i have a friend of a friend that has a nice closed loop stainless system (much like yours) that puts out amazing oil. I would love him to run my trim and popcorn.

Ya I am pretty excited about VOC testing at know your grow. Unfortunately they have not implemented it yet. Be safe bro
