Bayley is an Old English Sheepedog and on Science plan R/D for her weight and arthritis that's just starting,she always pooped a lot no matter what she would eat and they are rarely squirty,they are the exact same colour as the food but I don't stick to that diet rigidly because I feed her fish,chicken,turkey and beef,what kinda puts me off is the fact that the vet's office has science plan posters all over the waiting room and even the note paper they write on comes from SP,perhaps I'm too cynical but I believe they have an agenda and push the stuff.I also give her cod liver oil and glucosamine+chondroitin daily,at her last weigh in she was 90lbs+,also for the arthritis she has metacam,I'm not sure if you have that in the states but it's an anti-inflammatory and analgesic,also I only give it to her when she is very stiff and then only a half dose for three days because I believe it's severe on her stomach.hey homie! don't feel guilty, 13 for a dog is great. besides, it's what happened during those years that brought him happiness
what kind of dog is Bayley? perhaps i can help you out. i'm going to school to be a vet and my main areas of interest are canine nutrition and canine/human behavior and interactions.
LMAO at the plane analogy. however, stinky, loud, multiple farts mean something no bueno is going on in the tummy and intestines, etc. do you monitor her stool at all? is it generally firm and... healthy looking? obviously, as with humans, the squirts aren't good. what is the brand of Rx food do you feed her? and what is the reason you're feeding the Rx food? did a veterinarian recommend it?
yes, altering (spaying for females, neutering for males) is ALWAYS best done when the dog is still young/a juvenile (for females, it's best before she has her first menstrual cycle/goes into heat). BUT IT'S NEVER TOO LATE!! i am very pro-spay/neuter but i won't push it on anyone hehe. it helps sooo much with behavior, waste elimination (feces and urine) and overall health.
regarding Bayley though - she's 8 and was spayed at about 1 year? i would guess her weight probably isn't relative to the procedure; my Rogue was spayed around the same age, maybe a little older, and she's trim (which is a trait of one of her breed mixes though). i am interested in trying to help ya out a little bit if you are, too
) so anything i say should be taken with a grain of salt and NOT be viewed as medical advise, etc. but yeah- science diet sucks ass. they also sponsor (read: PAY) vets to carry their posters, Rx and non Rx food in their office... so exactly what you're thinking is true. if you Google reviews for Science Diet food or something similar you will see why. basically - dogs are opportunistic carnivores, meaning they will eat meat when possible but they'll also eat other stuff that seems tasty, if given the opportunity. BUT - think of it this way... if a dog was hungry, do you think he'd go looking for corn? NO lol, he'd go hunting for some meat until he happened upon something else to eat. corn is the #1 ingredient in most pet food... it is a starchy carb and similar to humans, it's good for a bit, but it doesn't fill you up for long and it's not a main course. it's an NSAID, similar to stuff humans use for arthritis! you are wise for dosing her infrequently; i believe in medication for sure but i am also kinda a hippy when it comes to that sorta thing. just make sure it's a very small amount. also, the cheaper the chocolate the better, as cheapo chocolate contains less theobromine (the bad ingredient) than expensive chocolates, lol. feel free to PM me if you ever have questions. or anyone here really

They gave her 3-4 months to live when we started her on Chemo, 1 year ago. She has brain cancer. Her DR's are amazed every month when we take her back in for another Chemo treatment.......The 1 thing I haven't told them is Mali has been receiving daily doses of THC extract. I had read about people using Cannabis for brain tumors, so we started her on TCH right away. I don't think she would be with us today, if not for Cannabis extract. She has shown to signs of any further progress of the cancer!
I would be inclined to tell them, but the law in Cali doesn't include dogs, only people. I'm afraid one of the drs in her vets practice might not see it the right way, and we'd be open for animal abuse charges.that is amazing. it made me tear up
you might try to find the most chill of her drs and then say hey i was reading something on the internet that seemed crazy... some vets are just crazy hippies with a knack for science lolz

having said that... no!! you are NOT too cynical! science diet is basically crap. in general i try really hard not to show too much bias when it comes to this sort of thing because people are obviously touchy about their kids (pets)

losing weight will help her arthritis, but it very likely won't cure it. sheepdogs are fairly chunky like you said, and they're not small dogs, so her weight isn't tragic. i bet if you stopped feeding her Science Diet and started on a more limited ingredient diet, limited to things like white/pink meats (fish, pork, chicken, not beef) and supplemented it with veggies and fruits she'd experience weight loss and significantly less gas, if it weren't eliminated altogether. lol maybe the occasional chocolate gives her gas! one of the side effects of chocolate/theobromine is digestive distress, so perhaps that's it? i would never ever recommend someone give their animal(s) chocolate but i *completely* understand where you are coming from
the supplements you give her may be giving her gas, specifically the cod liver oil. maybe try experimenting by removing one supplement for 2-3 days, then the second. only if you think it won't hurt her or cause her pain of course.
finally, it could always be something else entirely. perhaps she's eating something yucky she finds outside occasionally or whatever.

I make an extract with kief & some Everclear to break it down, then let it dry to a paste & mix in a little rice oil. A few drops on her food.I'm really pleased the THC is helping her.She's a fighter
I used to give my Fred little bits of bud ground up with butter and it definitely helped his appetite towards the end.
