Thanks for that summit I was wondering the same thing, but honestly didn't bother to google it :). How about onions when should you harvest those? Was it pointless for me to have planted the whole onion, wil lit just get bigger, or will it spout other onions like some bulb plants do(ie. the way lillies spread underground over time making more bulbs)
it really depends on the variety of onion, long day vs short day. either way its similar to garlic, harvest once the stalks/tops are done growing and dying back, usually early summer. if they bolt and go to flower i would cut the flowers off, but it may not help the bulbs have probably stopped growing at that point. you can dig them up to eat or store in a cool dark place to replant in the fall.

also no problem planting the same onion, again this depends on variety though. some will split and try to grow new onion sets (the little bulbs) but some will continue to grow and get huge. for example many of the larger onions in grocery stores are around 2 years old when we buy them to eat.

hope this helps :)

did you plant heads of garlic last sept of individual cloves? if you planted heads each clove will try to form its own plant this year, so those would need to be separated. if you grew from cloves last sept, keep them where they are until the tops grow really big and then die back. dont pick them before they start dying back of we will have the "pluck of dont pluck fan leaves" argument, don't pluck! haha.

The lady that sold me the bulbs had told me to plant the "cloves" from the "bulbs" and to plant those aaround mid Sept. So I had followed her directions to a tee, & still till this day the heads are about the size of a "green stalk onion".. hell the "bulbs" I planted where HUGE!!

Now with "green onions" my grandmother had always told me to "if you want green stalk" onions that when the stalks are up & really big, there ready. And if you wanted say a "bigger" onion bulb like the ones you'd get in the supermarket to let that "green stalk" die back, and then the onion head will then start to get larger..
I've really never herd about onions "spreading", unless that seed pod busts that's ontop the stalk towards the end of the grow season.. I normally cut those off for my seeds for next yr's garden.. ;)

My onions are some sort of large sweet onion, so they will prolly just get bigger over the summer. My guess on the garlic is it prolly didn't really grow much during the winter, and is just really getting going now.

Thats gonna depend alot on who you ask! I run hydro and run nutes till the end, usually doing some sort of flush mid way to remove excess salts from the root zone. I've tried flushing at the end and havn't really noticed much difference. But like I said this is one of the most controversial growing topics out there, just like the hydro vs soil debate.

My wife and I have decided what we wanted in our next home. Ill have to add an acre, for a garden, to go next to the pond. My dad used to grow a lot. He had veggies that everyone loved, even me and I hate veggies! But his roses were world class! Ill have to see if I can find some of his old journals.

Right on bro! ;) so how long should I let them go??? I had put that "garlic box" off to the right side of the garden around mid Sept, and now there right smack dab in the way of the other stuff I was going to be planting there!! Lol

Hell, they sure take awhile to get going I know that!! Its been in there from Sept till now, and there just now starting to take off!! Did yours bloom with "white flowers"??
That was just pics from Google man.
I've never tried Garlic before, though I would like to, but I got some Radishes and Green Onions going now, and they are both going longer than what the package said.
Here's something good.........

[h=1]How Long Does It Take to Grow Garlic?[/h]By Joseph Boyle , last updated January 31, 2012
It can be quite satisfying to grow your own garlic, and here is some useful information on how to go about it and how long you can expect it to take from planting to harvest. Garlic can make a wonderful addition to most any meal, adding its strong and distinctive flavor, and there is a great feeling of accomplishment in cooking a delicious meal for your family and friends, knowing that the garlic you are using came from your own home garden.

Conditions

Garlic is not too choosy about the type of soil it is grown in, as long as the soil is well-draining. It is also quite helpful to mix in compost before planting, as this will add much-needed nutrients to the soil, and will also help aerate it, which will aid in the draining process. Since garlic is in the ground all season, if the soil gets waterlogged, you run the risk of your garlic rotting in the ground. Also be sure that your garlic is planted in a place that will receive full sunlight.

Timeline

The ideal time for planting will vary depending on your climate. But in most moderate climate zones, October is a good time to get your garlic in the ground. Being in the soil over the course of the winter will help the garlic to form into cloves. A generally accepted indicator of harvest time for garlic is when the leaves begin to brown and die back. This will usually happen sometime between July and August, though this is just a general rule, and may vary depending upon the climate you are growing in and seasonal weather conditions. In most climates, however, mid to late summer is the ideal harvest time.

Hey bro gonna do some catching up on your thread ASAP how is the ww doing?
Haha!! What up big dog!? Shit I've not seen you in a minute!! ;) everything going ok bro? Well, that 1st one didn't really do so well. It got up to around 4 nodes, I had put it into one of those "air-pots", and had it under the 400watt HPS, and was feeding it the Foxfarms I believe, and it was just looking alittle langly, so I took & placed it with all my guys that's I planned on placing outdoors, and just went & planted it earlier today as a matter of fact..
Along with 52 other girls.. ;)
