18/6 or 24/7

To each his own on this one. I've tried 20/4, 18/6 and find 24/7 to be the fastest growth and nice and bushy.

Well duh. Of course you'll get faster growth with 6 more hours of light.

The old man who showed me the ropes told me when you go 24/7 you get approximately 10-15% faster growth but you use 25% more electricity. I've found this to be close.

Well duh! You actually burn less electricity running 24/7 due to shorter veg times. What takes 6 weeks on 18/6 to grow takes four weeks on 24/7 Duh!

Well 4 weeks at 24/7 is 672 hours, 6 weeks at 18/6 is 756 hours of light. So, if this does actually decrease veg time it seems worth it. But I don't know if you actually get the same growth in those 2 scenarios (672hrs vs 752hrs). Anyone seen any side by side examples?

it would be a waste imo during the seedling phase or first 2-3 weeks seedlings grow slowly during this phase anyway and do not require much light
there is not much you can do to speed up the seedling phase although heat does help, for clone and seed plants during the veg phase 24/0 will speed things up
but i think much of this is due to the constant heat of the lights,

plants can clearly be seen to droop over at around 15-16 hours
the leaves hang down, newbies think the plants are wilting, but they are sleeping* when the leaves are not fully stretched out they are not photosynthesizing to their full potential
so even when you give them 24/0 it would seem they do not need it or want it naturally

Don't worry about your yields worry about having a healthy plant and the yield will take care of itself. Personally I like to give everything a bit of a rest, my lights, my electric bill, I feel plants do benefit from rest temps can cool off a bit, you will find this is a never ending debate so try it yourself and then switch it up next time. I found plants do grow a bit faster under 24/0 as opposed to 18/6 I kinda go in the middle and do 20/4 for the reasons stated above. Big yields is what your looking for? Then you can veg longer, grow plants know for big yields, have proper lighting and watering/feeding schedule, all that will come to play into your end result not just how many hours of light your plants gets. The guy who grows 24/0 for 3 weeks then flips to 12/12 may be setup to do quick turn-arounds and get less yield but more often. Guy who does 18/6 and vegs for two months and grows bigger plants may have bigger yields less often. Have to find what works well for you and your setup.

if you say so (smiles and nods):joint:
If you think about it, it would make sense in theory. Cannabis DOES grow faster under 24/0 than it does under 18/6.

30 days of 24/0 = 720 hours
40 days of 18/6 = 720 hours

So you save 10 days doing 24/0.. IMO, if you're up to it, can handle the heat I say go for it.

I go with 18/6. If I was a plant, I know I wouldn't wanna b working all the time lol
Oh but they do. As does every other living organism on this planet until the day it dies. Nothing stops until it stops forever. Also, there are places on earth that get non stop sun for an extended period of time over the summer, so plants do and can grow under non stop light. It's another myth in the cannabis world that they can't.

I am an engineer at heart (and by trade) so what I am interested in is efficiency. Light schedules seem to be one of those topics that really gets people spun up. The two most controversial are 24/0 and 12-1. Net-net, you cant really go wrong with 18/6 because it does work, could you shave a couple weeks off or a few bucks saving if you tried the others? Maybe, but unless you have the room to spare to do a full test you will never really know. And even if you do a comprehensive test you will find a lot of people still will not believe (one way or the other).

I think I will try the 12-1 lighting when I veg in the summer (less heat) otherwise will end up sticking with 18/6 since I like keeping my lights off time during peak electricity times since we occasionally get rolling brown outs during the summer.

Several years ago I saw a side by side by side grow of clones. One tent was 18/6, the next was 20/4, the last was 24/7.
Based on final yields...
20/4 was the best
18/6 second
24/7 worst.

It was only one time and there could have been other variables, all clones dont grow exactly the same.
I liked it because it backed up my instinct, which is 24/7 just doesn't seem natural.

I've done it and found 24/7 grows them faster and bushier. They can rest during flower. And, as earlier mentioned there are places that have 24/7 sun and the plants do well.
