Is there a way to slow down the growth of a clone?

I know you are gonna ask why in the hell i would do that but my light isnt here yet to start budding and one of my clone grew to over 2ft. in 2wks. I have them in a separate area away from my others. So I dont want the clones to get to damn huge in the 8wks bud time. I thought about cutting it in half and doing another clone maybe???? Any ideas? They are under fluorescents right now. Sounds like you have stretching going on.

How far away are your flourescent lights?

Depending upon their wattage they should be between 1"-10" away.

The average distance is around 4".

It's been about 2" away with 2 40watt bulbs since it was about 2 inches tall. I thought stretching too cause the distance between some of the pistils up the stem is around 3" apart..........weird thing is I did 2 clones from the same plant and the other one is less than half that size with same size pot and same soil, sitting on the shelf right next to the huge one. Could it be cut in half and cloned again ya think? not sure why its stretching though. Thanks

They don't have enough light, is why they are stretching. Either put a screen over the top of it like you are going to scrog, or wait it out until you get better lights. Use blue spectrum lights to get small compact plants.

I have 4 250 watt metal halides in my reg room waiting for some new agrosun bulbs to bud with but just have the fluros in the cloning chamber. the plan was to be ready to bud these as soon as my regular plants are done budding

You've got about 5" of usable light penetration.

Good enough for a 3"-7" plant.

If that 40w was contained in a household cfl then it wouldn't be as bad.


IMO you would be best served making a few clones now and waiting for your light to arrive and throw away the big plant.

hmm makes sense. I'm waitin for 4 agrosun gold metal halides, 250 watt. to bud the plants in my reg. grow room. They are about 4ft tall and more than ready to bud

You do realise that a 250w has around 18" worth of decent penetration????

I use a 400w and don't allow my plants to exceed 2ft tall.

If I put stronger light in the cloning chamber that may keep them shorter? For right now I was wondering about topping the clones until the 8wks budding is over for the reg. plants. Why metal halide for bud?

If you put a few cool white (6500k) cfl's in there that should stop the stretch.

Oh ok I have shit loads of cool whites. I am using the halides because i had one when I started and got a deal on 3 more. cant afford hps units so i bought the new Agrosun gold halide bulbs with the red spectrum enhanced. I plan to use a mix in the side fluros of cool white/daylight to help budding to.

My personal opinion, the first investment the majority of people should make when deciding to grow indoors, is on LIGHTS!

The next would be spending the time to create a good controllable environment!

In part yes.

Your 250w lights are your problem because you seem to think you can grow 4ft plants with them.

Because you have 4 it doesn't mean you have a 1000w lamp.

It means you have 4 lights each with an xyz axis footprint of 1.5ftx1.5ftx1.5ft.

Anything outside of this area under each light will NOT receive enough light energy due to the inverse square law of light.


If you mount your lights in a line then you could grow in an area of 6ftx1.5ftx1.5ft.


If your plants exceed 2ft tall TOTAL then the lower parts of the plant receive virtually ZERO light.


To maximise your light your plants need to be harvested under 2ft tall once flowering is finished.



Is any of this making sense to you?


1000w hps can use a 5ftx5ftx5ft area.
600w hps can use 4ftx4ftx4ft
400w hps 3ftx3ftx3ft
250w hps 2ftx2ftx2ft

no, see I am not having problems with my plants under the halides, yes they are tall but have good stems and about 5/8" spacing between pistils.....problem is,one of my clones in the chamber (ie. seperate room) is growing to tall. (am growing in a rotation, clones to bud room as soon as others are done budding) And yes I understand lights and just cause i have 4 250's doesnt add up to a 1000 watt.................actually...........4 250w agrosuns are better for budding IMO than a single 1000, not so much because of penetration per plant but points of light per plant. Yeah math makes sense to me..........1 1000 watt does 5x5x5 a 250 does 2x2x2 now multiply that times four. holy crap thats more area huh? Now add in the side lights for the lower parts that are recieving NO light as you said...............Can I cut a clone in half or not? I think I have the answer I needed for why the clones are stretching. but need to know how to proceed w/ cutting it. any certain place to avoid cutting it etc. thanks
