HeatSink Maker Wants Your Input on What you Want in a Heatsink...

I emailed a heatsink company who actually makes a decent heatsink who caters to the aquarium community.

I emailed them and explained there's a whole other market out there for DIY growers who need heatsinks and that even tho they make a decent heatsink it could use some changes for us growers.

My thing is that the width is too narrow at 6.5"for my DIY project and needs a few more T-slots width wise. Plus the side walls would be blocking the light if you use a wider angle lens and we don't use a see thru panel to cover the lights. So Side walls need to go on the bottom where LED'S will be.



Well anyway here's some of his questions...

1-What is the optimal LED spacing for growers?

2-How wide would you want to see a heatsink?

The heatsink in question is http://makersled.com/?page_id=477 which the aquarium community loves .

So if you have any suggestions of what you would like to have in a heatsink please post as they are willing to listen to their customers which is a good sign for any company today.

I will email him this link so he will be reading this thread and hopefully posting also. If you have any ideas please post away ..it will benefit all of us.

Just providing a courtesy bump. I'd like to see something come from this, I'd definitley buy if the right design and price are used.

MakersLED heatsinks look very nice as a finished fixture which is something a lot of people want because their aquarium is in the living or family room on display. I don't care how industrial looking the heatsink is for growing; so far aluminum tubes with a manifold and pressurized fan or heatsinkusa heatsinks have been good for me...and I can't really think of anything that I would change. I get a wider fixture thru the use of multiple aluminum tubes and a manifold...of course, I know how to make the manifold.

1) if you mean distance between each LEDs, you shouldn't need to place them closer than 1inch, you'll avoid overheating better managing junction temp...
But also, with quality LEDs there's no need to space them any closer!
2)if by how wide you mean how much? General guidance would be min. of 9sq/inch x every watt burned employing fans, 20sq/inches x every watt burned for passive cooling

Yes 1" would do the job.

As of now with the makersled heatsink if I were to set up my leds in a merkaba of 15 leds (which I'm doing) they would be
right next to each other due to there's only 5 T-slots on the heatsink width wise. Plus the light would be too concentrated like a spot light.

It would also cause unwanted overheating. So a wider heatsink is a must being as it is now it's only 6.5" wide to allow
for more T-Slots.


Makers LED replied to my email about me posting this thread and said they will be watching this thread because they are ready to
move on with another heatsink for us growers.

So any helpful info in designing a heatsink for growers would be helpful...they are interested in what the growing community thinks.

How about fin sizes ..height ..width or how many per inch ?

What type of aluminum gauge ?

2-How wide would you want to see a heatsink? probably based on grow space size & # of plants

just thought about using 1" alum pipe schedule 40 (or maybe better just use copper tubing, ooh I think I just stumbled on something) with return elbows at every end of every pipe spot welded together as many as you want (i.e. each pipe added makes your heat sink 1"+ wider) ending up with an open end of the pipe at each side so you could push coolant/air/chilled water whatever making a thermostatically controlled heat sink. where attaching leds tack strips of 1" wide copper to provide level attachment area and good heat transfer to the pipe
