Here is my situation: I spotted 2 70 watt HPS on a barn that was going to be destroyed so I cut the cords and took them. I made sure to et ballast and all but when I tried to reconnect the wires to a replacement wire and plug it in, the light doesn't turn on : (

Any advice??? Thanks

Maybe that's why they left them on a barn that was goin' down? Tough break. Good luck, though. Are you sure the plug you're using to test on is hot? To be certain the fixtures are shot, skin a little bit of the wires (w/o plug) and ease them in to an outlet . . . one wire, each side. If you hear the ballast, or any related noises, and the bulb doesn't kick in, it's the bulb.

my experience the ballast wont hum unless the bulb works, could have a bad cap or ignitor, how does the filament look in the bulb???

The filament looks fine. I plugged the wires into an outlet without the plug and there wasnt any noise or light : ( Does this mean it wont work at all? Or could a new bulb possibly solve my problem?

It won't hum if the night eye is seeing day. Follow the link I gave you, disable the sensor, make it a remote ballast for heat issues. Cover the eye with tape to test them.

I dunno about these kind of lights, but am an electrician . . . you're better off following Kush/outrunu's ideas. Good luck!

Hey outrunu, sounds like ya know whats up but the link takes me to an advertisement... where should I be goin to see that info on how to cover up the eye and all?

Thanks

If the light has a photo cell you should see this on the outer casing of the fixture there are a couple diff. kinds of photo cells, some that attach to the fixture and some that are internal, just look for a little clear plastic circle about the size of a dime, cover with elec. tape and wait a couple minutes for it to kick on
