Choosing a Mother (Question)

I found a strain i would like to mother. question is how should i approach it.. from seed or a clone? (female seed) i know the strain carries 2 phenotypes i am able to identify the phenotypes during veg which is important for choosing the mother i want with out sending her to flower.

If i keep my mother plant from seed, everytime I will be flowering 2nd generation genetics (Technically)

If i keep my mother plant from a clone, i will be flowering 3rd generation genetics.

Is there a difference in yield/quality in 3rd generation in comparison to 2nd generation?

Id like to test the theory eventually, just wondering if anyone has any experience or insight.

Have a great day

also, do u get less yield and quality from a clone in general? i never use clones, i grow from seed so i am unable to compare..

thanks

I would say clone.. a clone would give you 1 of the 2 phenotypes you are appearing to be in search of, or she wouldn't have been considered for cloning.. I would assume, anyway. That said, if you clone her, you can have X amount of guaranteed female plants, and unless the genetics are way off, you'd do better to work with all females.. unless you really want to play the genetics roll of the dice pheno game to produce something more to your liking. You did say you'd like to test that eventually, so without more rambling.. X amount of females via clone seems to be a much better option for what you wish to do than X amount of male & female, given that the time for test is not now. Thus, time/effort/nutes/light has to go into males, for no other reason than potentially finding a nice pheno that may compliment selected super-mother. Worth it? Perhaps? Is your grow room set/stable enough for you to keep males completely isolated so you can keep a strong one should you wish for mass testing? Is it worth the time (to you) to handle the males, or would you rather stick with the 2 pheno you've identified?

That said, yield from clones does not appear to be less - specific strain, and growing conditions more often than not will be the determining factors of yield, all other things aside.

Me personally, I only use clones. You get the genetically same plant everytime. No need to grow them out and sex them. I find seeds to be a pain in the ass. I'm growing out blueberry from seed right now and 7 out of 10 popped, so now I have to wait to see who's male or female. Makes the number of plants I have right now a bit disconcerting.

Any clone from a mother plant is not a different generation.....it is an exact duplicate of the mother, genes and all including age. Grow out a bunch of seeds, keep a few clones of each plant, harvest and test (smoke) each plant when dried. Keep detailed notes on each potential mother plant i.e. appearance, health, finish time, etc. and then you'll be able to make a well informed decision. Too many people keep a mother based on looks alone- and that's only a part of the equation.

There may be a slight decline over time in the clones from a mother but on the short term you probably won't notice it. I once held a Seed Bank N.L. 5 X 2, a great mother plant that yielded me over 1800 clones in a 2 year period. The plant became a small tree, and I had to keep increasing the pot size as the root ball got bigger and bigger- but I never noticed any decline in plant health (or appearance) or quality of the smoke. Over time though, genetic drift does happen decreasing some of the traits/health/quality.

Quality will be better with clones since the clone keeps the mother plants age- if the mother is 5 years old, the clone is also 5 years old per se. This is important BECAUSE the older the plant, the better it's capacity to produce resin. Clones will also finish a week or two earlier than the mother plant originally did......

wow great information everyone. i am furshur going to use a mother from a clone

Dinefem- Blue Widow is the strain i had some amber at 50 days which is remarkable. big fat tasty buds.. i now have 3 of them 1 week into veg right now from seed. i was going to keep my fav phenotype that previously gave me great bud as my mother (a seed mother) and not send it into floweing. after reading this, i wll clone them all before flower, flower all 3 of them, decide after there are finished flowering which mother i want :)

thanks alot guys for you POV

Have fun with it, and clone like mad - if you dont like what you see, clone clone clone until you do, and keep the party goin' :D Welcome! =)
