Hey RIU, so this is my first post here and I have a few odor control questions for you guys.

What is the best method, in your opinion, to control odor?
How long does your favored method typically last before it needs replacement?

Carbon activated filter. Not cheap at all

Is it not cheap because you have to replace it often or just the initial cost or both?

The cheapest I've seen is right around ~$100 but I don't think it would be effective for more than a small closet.

Well i'm fairly new to growing but not life, you get what you pay for.

Buy cheap and thats the quality you will get, better to get some experienced growers opinions on good carbon filters and spend a few more dollars initially.

Some filters are definitely better than others and when it comes to protecting your harvest (and yourself depending on the situation) I wouldn't skimp to save a few bucks.

This is usually true, but not always, especially when it comes to growing marijuana. A lot of the equipment and supplies used have HUGE unnecessary mark ups on it. A lot of unscrupulous hydro shop owners, and others, take advantage of the lack of knowledge of the average marijuana grower.

That being said there is a difference between carbon scrubbers. I have only used cheap scrubbers, some work well, some don't. My next one will be a name brand scrubber. Nearly everything else I will use cheaper but functional versions.

Exactly. If you are wrong with your nutes, or your lights, or your co2 generator, or whatever, you can always upgrade later to a more expensive version. A bad carbon scrubber could get you busted though. Better to be safe than sorry.

What about odor blocks? Masking the smell.

I am on my 2nd grow and so far am 7 weeks into flwr. I have two blocks doing all the work ... very well it seems. It is almost eerie. I have a carbon filter sitting on the floor with a 'why bother with it' thought hanging over it.

My sense lately is I should use it.

Goes off to hook up filter.




The blocks are very good. My organic genes are suspicious of them however.

The problem with just masking the smell is just that, it only masks, it does not trap or destroy like other odor control technology. Depending on your situation, that might cost you in the end, because although the human nose cant discern the scent under the mask, a K9 nose can and will...that's why people who smuggle things in gas tanks get caught, the dogs can still smell the odor underneath the gasoline odor, while the humans cannot. Mythbusters proved that. lol

How long do you typically run a carbon filter for before you replace it?

My last few seemed to last about a year until I started to notice the smell. The new one I got last month is cheap and not doing a very good job. I am noticing a slight smell in the basement, but not upstairs. It's eliminating most of the smell, but not all of it. I'm going to ditch the last one and get a new name brand one and see if that rectifies the problem.
