My attempt at cloning & growing from seed.

Hi all,

New to the scene and just need some advise as to wether I am doing things correctly.
I have a standard non heated propgator with dome and two air holes.
I have 7 clones which I have used clonex gel on and have also started mixing vitalink seedling food into my water. I've been misting twice a day and I have a hot water bottle underneath the propagator to stop the temperature from dropping(temperature averaging between 10-20C.
My seeds have been in rockwool cubes for maybe 5-7 days and have shown signs of germination.
I am using a fish tank light of 11watts and it's a flourescant tube roughly 30 centimetres above the propagoter.
Any advise and do's/don'ts appreciated.

I haven't had any personal experience cloning but it seems like what you're doing will work out.

Thanks for your reply Red.
I still have my concerns regarding the light as to wether an 11w light will be powerfull enough.
I have my light on for 18hours.

Go to Pet Smart. Buy a reptile mat. Rain forest model or desert it doesn't matter in your case. Heat those things and they will make it. Won't take but a few days to a week from clone in to roots showing. Not saying yours won't root but better your chances.

Or for less than $50 buy an aerocloner. 21 site for $49.00. Maybe far less on eBay. Or build it with a submersible pump and the couple of fittings needed (misting heads with 2 each 270 degree coverage and 2 each 360 degree coverage. The cheapest way yet.

sorry harley, youre one of the guys i really respect around here, but he should buy more light before anything. 11watts of actual light is not enough.

you want at least 100 watts total, with a mixed color of 5000k+ for vegetative growth, and 2700k for flower. make sure the fluorescents you buy have a c.r.i. of 80+

how long did your seeds take to break earth? i too push my seeds into my soil, just level with the top of it, cover with spinkle of soil, push down once or twice, and then mist twice a day with warm water.

More light will not hurt nor will it help in starting clones. In fact that is why you trim the fan leaves off entirely and reshape the remaining leaves - so it focuses its energy forming roots and not vegetation. Think about it. Roots before shoots. That's the way they grow.

i learned that from my dad and didnt fully believe him. he was yelling at me for starting my tomato seeds in a big pot, but then i heard it from you too so roots before shoots. as a seedling, the plant will get just big enough to covert light into energy, then start to make roots and stretch.

when roots are laid, the plant will develop structure. this is the start of vegetative state.

Thank you for both of your replys!

@Harley I will probably investing in something along those lines once I get some extra funds available :)

@bmeat I have a full grow room but it's currently in 12/12 at the moment so my babies can't go in there right now thats why I had to set this up :)
I'll take a look into getting hold of a 100w light thank you for the advice.

that 11watt light will be just fine for seedlings AND cuttings, i root all my cuttings with nothing but reflected light.

...here's a couple pics of my little cloning op and if you like what you see let me know and i'll post up some links, ...note also that the lower bulbs not only provide the reflected light, they also passively provide warmth for the upper reservoirs and seed starts.

Check this out, brother. Read, start collecting the parts and go big to grow big. Good luck.

i didnt know you could use low light levels for clones. just goes to show, they do make roots in the dark!

Loving the set up - links would be great!
...sure thing man and thanks for the props although i'm just sharing with you what was shared with me by others, ...i'm just another guy like you, just further down this road is all.

anyway, i've spent the last 6 plus years learning a way that works for me and many others and the approach i take is simplicity, once i committed myself to simplifying my methods, my grow just took off, as it were, lol. ...and in the beginning when first learning your chops, simple is good, simple is repeatable, reliably repeatable.

...i'm still no expert though so rather than try to reteach what i've learned, i like to post links to the threads that have influenced me most. ...there is a world of difference between knowing a thing well enough to do it and knowing it well enough to teach it if you know what i mean.

...then, after you have had a chance to read through and learn the basics at your own pace, then we can talk and begin to share experiences.

so, not knowing really what your skill level is i offer a few threads not exactly germane to the topic of cloning but are definitely germane to being able to grow enough to meet your needs in a repeatable and reliable way.

...first, my preferred cloning technique that i pictured in my earlier post, totally passive, almost put and forget. ...EXTREMELY reliable AND cheap as hell to run.
World class cloner new at walmart

...this one is to my clone/seedling cabinet build where you can see how i incorporated passive techniques into my design.
my micro cloning factory...PL-L's and Walmart cloners doing the job!

...this one is to a method of storing cuttings for extended periods, up to a month and more.
Holding clones in stasis? (the refrigerator method)

...and this one is to my main method, the hempy bucket method which is a totally passive form of hydroponics adapted from ancient technology probably dating back to the Romans. (i do it a little different than in this thread)
The Official Hempy Bucket Thread

...and this thread is to the KISS style of feeding which is not only very effective, as this thread will show, it is also very inexpensive to run.
*The K.I.S.S. Method*

...and this last is to the benefits to growing with your light in a vertical orientation, ...i personally use a single barebulb 600 to flower with and i love it this way.
Benefits of Vertical Growing

...anyway, i hope you won't mind the information overload but you DID say you wanted links, lol, and each of these links contains a key element that enables me to do what i do, ...and believe me, as these threads will attest, i'm not alone.

...my grow has NEVER been easier OR more productive than it is right now, ...if you study these threads you can get there a lot quicker than it took me.

peace, bozo

Thanks Bozo sorry I haven't replied but I've had alot of problems with my dam internet!

By the way at what height should I move my seedlings into soil pots?
Two of my seeds have sprouted to the length of 4CM and 5CM's but I don't see the roots coming out of the rockwool at all.
I also have 3 of my seeds not really doing much they have sprouted but are far far behind the other two seeds.

Any help appreciated.

PS I will attach some pictures ASAP

Roots before shoots, lad. Hang in there. I have smoked some kneewalker that resulted from seedlings others would have tossed. Do your bits right and give them a chance.

I understand thank you again :)
I've got some cable ties and may get some cotton buds in case they get to tall.
I've also got a 20w light(on the box it states its the equivalent to a 200w or something maybe something to do with energy saving.)
And finally I've taken the timer off of my light and just leaving it on constantly.
