So I have been reading up allot of this condition for the past few months, I am 100% sure this is what I am suffering from. Please take this very seriously if you suffer from any type of morning nausea or stomach cramps you cant explain. Smoking makes them both exponentially worse at the time of the symptoms. Only a hot/warm bath and LOTS of sleep can make it go away for the day.

To start I am a young healthy male, early 20's. I go to the doctor regularly, work out, try to take care of myself. I have been smoking for 2 years and 7 months with maybe 10 days all together that I didn't get medicated. For the last 4-5 months I have been waking up with extreme nausea and stomach cramps. The nausea is to the point where I just have to sit down next to my toilet for a hour to hour and a half almost every morning, or whenever I wake up that day. I've become so used to this routine that I have to get up an extra hour before work every morning to compensate for the time i spend vomiting. I have been to two doctors in the last two months for this. One said it sounds exactly like a severe food allergy, so I went on anti-gens and cut out eating anything I was even remotely allergic to for a month and a half, did not help. The doctor then suggested my cannabis may be the culprit, its called Cannabinoid hyperemesis he says.... obviously i didn't want to believe that.

Next I went to my endocrinologist, I have thyroid issues so I said hey this could be it! Doctor does a blood test, stool sample. Both come back clean, nothing abnormal with my thyroid levels, no parasites found, nothing. Again my doctor says there is a strong chance I am suffering from Cannabinoid hyperemesis, I'm in California by the way, where doctors have been seeing this condition in ever increasing waves. My endo set me up with zofran in the hopes it would kill the nausea on days I had to go to work. It did NOTHING, this is what they give people for chemotherapy too.... It was worthless. The only other suggestion I could get which WAS being thrown around the whole time, stop smoking cannabis.

Its been one week since I stopped putting ANY type of cannaboid into my body and I feel amazing. No more nausea, no more vomiting. I miss getting stoned for sure..... but its just not worth feeling like you have swine flu every morning for 4-5 hours. I'm going to start back up in a few days time, but Instead of a gram per day I'm thinking half a bowl.

I just wanted to share my story with others because I have read so many of these story's lately. Its a real thing, Cannabinoid hyperemesis. If you have morning sickness, and stomach cramps, diarrhea. Its the cannabis.

Obviously this doesn't effect everyone it has everything to do with your individual body, I only smoked extremely high grade meds as well, nothing ever un-lab tested at at least 20% thc. Lots of concentrates tested around 60-85% thc, so the amount of cannaboids in my system was always very very high.
My son suffered the exact same thing he frightened me to death I thought their was something seriously wrong with him, he stopped eating and lost weight and by pure chance I said to him to stop smoking weed for a while it was the only thing I could think of that might be doing it and it worked, he was unable to sleep for a while when he first stopped but the sickness and stomach pain soon subsided and he was fine. He only does it occasionally now and he seems okay.

if pot isn't for you then I doubt 'shrooms are going to be any better.Probably much worse
How do you make this conclusion? The chemicals in shrooms and pot aren't even the same....so why would you assume this person would have a negative reaction to shrooms just b/c they do w/pot? Not being an asshole, just curious if you know something a/b shrooms that I don't.

never used shrooms. have used this stuff called 25-c-nbome that has to be carefully dosed, came as a powder in a capsule you snort or take sublingually. Best to snort half and wait 30 mins for 2nd half on first try... otherwise youll end up in a bath crying like i did... shits crazy fuck psychedelics

i had the same issue, i just started smoking after i felt like puking and it helped. now i can go a day or more and so on and i dont get that. it can be temp, but you are smoking tons a day. i was used to smoking a couple of joints a day and had it, but i think it was because i never flushed my plant and my house was dirty as fuck.

Weird, I smoke to get rid of my irritable stomach. Nothing worked after years of doctors visits, but a wake and bake kicks it every time.

Everyone is different I guess.

Hiya, really interested in your story.

If you have searched cannabinoid Hyperemesis there is a good chance you have seen one of my posts lol

Dont get me wrong, I arm not here to attack you or say it isnt true, far from it. Infact cannabis hyperemesis and my illness CVS seem to have some overlapping symptoms which does sometimes lead to misdiagnosis of some CVS patients. I am trawling the internet looking for threads such as yours to try and find some differences between the 2 illnesses in the hope it will help both sets of patients in the future.

I see you havent listed many of your symptoms, I hope you dont mind a few questions for research purposes. Did you vomit much? Or was it literally daily nausea and stomach cramping? Were there anything that appeared to trigger these symptoms or was it literally when you woke up, the pain and nausea was just there? Did the symptoms appear to get worse as you continued smoking over the 2 years? A couple of people who said they have gotten better after abstaining from cannabis reported that their symptoms appeared to get worse while they continued to smoke, I am just wondering if this is the norm I suppose.

Thanks again. Please dont see this as me debating what is wrong with you, I really arent. If cannabis causes your illness then so be it. I know cannabis doesnt cause CVS and from what you have described so far it doesnt sound like your a sufferer of the puke monster so I am not comparing you to me at all. Just wondering what symptoms have disappeared since you have stopped smoking :)

Hiya again lol With regard to the above, I have seen someone else mention this aswell but I am confused. If more and more patients are reporting this like your doctors are claiming, why is it only a small amount of people (maybe 10), who have ever posted their stories on the internet? and of them very few have posted details of their exact symptoms? It should be the doctors reporting it in journals etc if patient numbers are increasing, not the odd person on a cannabis forum. Incidentally the stories on the internet like yours are all made on cannabis forums. I never see any medical threads about the symptoms people are suffering from, which does surprise me if i am honest. I can appreciate you wanting to spread the word ofcourse, but you have only been symptoms free for a week so its hardly confirmation of cannabis hyperemesis yet (I mean that in the nicest way possible).

From my research I really dont see any increase in numbers of patients and I have been actively looking for months now. If even 0.01% of smokers suffered from this illness then that is still ALOT of patients that would have come forward by now. If it was 10% of smokers suffered then this number would be in the 100,000. Again, I have been searching for months now and can count on my hand the amount of people like yourself who claim to suffer from it. It really isnt that common.........unless you know something I dont ofcourse (which you may well do) :)

I'm not a daily smoker. Just a couple times a week, maybe - a small bowl in the evening. However, I have had periods where I would go on a "bender" and smoke in the evening every day for a week or so. When I did that, I would suffer from some intestinal disharmony in the morning. In my opinion, for myself, there is a causal link between the smoking and those symptoms.

He's correct. There is a blog over on the Norml website concerning weed hyperemesis. Your symtoms are classic. I checked over there and I wasn't able to find the exact link but there are plenty of people that have this condition and most use the hot bath method for relief. It can be serious and require hospitalization. Good luck.

found it... http://stash.norml.org/chronic-marijuana-abuse-leads-to-severe-vomiting-attacks

[btw CVS sufferer, I did see your posts over there, good work and hope you find an answer. It appears to be fairly common now that we have internet/google]

Hiya mate, thanks, me too, however answers are really few and far between unfortunately.

That blog on norml website you mention is very misleading with some very confusing posts on there. Some from people who think they have cannabis hyperemesis, some who think they have cvs, some who dont even think they have either but think the can judge what other people suffer from! I wouldnt use that as any type of evidence to prove cannabis hyperemesis exists or infact has many people suffering from it. It is unfortunately just like this thread and the other 10+ I have saved on my favourites......just a few people posting about their son, partner etc with very few people coming forward actually discussing the symptoms that have disappeared since abstaining. Seriously, there is 400 posts on there and no-one coming back to help others by explaining their symptoms. At the very least I find that disappointing.

I appreciate what you are saying aswell mate but it really isnt fairly common. A handful of threads may make it seem that way but if you search any other medical ailment and you will find many many thousands of more posts. Cannabis Hyperemesis is only in the theory stage and there is nothing to say it will ever get recognised. I have since learnt that all of the abstracts bouncing around the internet are not actual studies but only observations made my various doctors (some never even see the patients) who then write a paper about a theorised illness that maybe other doctors will read and if there is an illness around the world, it will eventually be found. Apparently that is how most illnesses have been recognised over the years however cannabis hyperemesis has not been officially recognised, hence all you will find are theories and poorly done studies as oppose to real science or evidence.

There are many million cannabis smokers in the English speaking world and I have maybe found 2/3 people who have come back time and again to discuss their symptoms in detail......the rest (at the very most 200) unfortunately only share very little details of their symptoms and are just repeating what the abstracts or theories say, with no apparent desire to discuss any of their symptoms which may help other people. From my research I have found at best about 100-200 different people in all of the world which is surely classed as extremely rare, to a point that really other causes need looking at?

I have only found my way here trying to investigate the link that is being made between my illness CVS and the theorised illness of cannabis hyperemesis, of which one of the alleged symptoms are "cyclic vomiting". Many sufferers of CVS have abstained from cannabis with no relief whatsoever. Incase anyone is interested, here is a paper written by an actual CVS doctor in which she states that the cannabis being the cause of CVS has been investigated and remains controversial. This still doesnt stop doctors labelling us sufferers, hence why I am questioning literally everything. Not to be awkward, also not to argue. But to get some correct information out there to people who maybe dont have the time to search like I have - http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/933135-overview

Thanks again mate and I am not arguing about cannabis hyperemesis, but looking for people who are better after abstaining from cannabis and just exactly what they are better from. It is ok saying "I suffer from cannabis hyperemesis" but for example the OP of this thread doest appear to have cyclic vomiting which is one of the alleged symptoms of Cannabis Hyperemesis. I suspect in many cases people arent suffering from this "theorised" cannabis hyperemesis but are mistaking this for just general IBS or other complications caused by either smoking cannabis, eating the wrong foods (which are obviously both linked with munchies etc) or are just catching on to this Cannabis Hyperemesis and making a link if that makes sense which is ofcourse dangerous if something more serious is causing the symptoms.

Maybe one day we will have the answers. Until then I am the one who appears to be doing all of the talking on these threads until people actually come forward and share their symptoms. You cant suffer from an illness that doesnt exist and cannabis hyperemesis is not a recognised illness so I think everyone should look at the symptoms smoking cannabis is causing rather than giving your illness a name, far more safer!

(wow sorry for another rant...I have to stop doing that but I feel I need to say so much to get the correct information out there. If anyone has anything different ofcourse please share it, that is what I want. Maybe patients of this marijuana morning sickness are on the increase.....certainly not where i live though.

i havent smoked at all today and i still havent had a flare up.
Hiya,

Glad to hear you are feeling better, that is the main aim :) Can I just asked what symptoms have disappeared? You say a flare up, what is a flare up to you? Is there anything you are able to eat or do now that would trigger a flare up before when you was smoking cannabis?

Thanks and again, I arent questioning you to debate what your symptoms, I am genuinely interested to compare them to mine and other CVS Sufferers where abstaining cannabis didnt help but a combination of medication does. :)

Cheers

Not to sound mean, but a lot of those symptoms are similar to Crohns and Colitis, have you looked into those possibilities? And not to discredit your research it's just another avenue to pursue.

Ah yeah you see, this is exactly the reason why I am investigating things. It is very very dangerous.

I am fearful that people read threads like this and will then attribute their symptoms solely to cannabis use, abstain, feel better and assume it was this theorised illness of cannabis hyperemesis.

It may well be but unlike many posters on these threads, I am certainly not brave enough to apportion blame of someones health problems to a substance. Especially as Mojo points out, there are several real illnesses that cause these symptoms and they must be ruled out first. Even if they are ruled out, crohns for example may not show up on every test. There are various different types which can be missed for years. Just because symptoms have disappeared after quiting cannabis does not mean it was cannabis causing peoples problems if that makes sense.....it could only be making things worse with an underlying issue that is now ignored because of cannabis hyperemsis.

Thanks for posting that it does show my concerns over peoples loose use of the word cannabis hyperemesis. I know many people say they have had every test done and the doctors say it is cannabis caused, but I have also had many tests done and have been told that several illnesses will not always show themselves when the test is done. Like I said, I arent saying cannabis isnt adding to someones illness as it certainly wont be for everyone, I am just investigating what cannabis hyperemesis is supposed to be in the hope it will stop it being confused with other potentially more serious illnesses.

The issue I see is that most of the scientific studies on cannabis have been geared towards a more "social" objective, it has only been in the last couple of years that main stream science has taken a more serious look into the effects of cannabis and it's active substances.

There is a lot of research into the endocrine system and how it's being effected by the cannabinoids found in marijuana...such things as fat metabolism.

It may be possible that marijuana is acting as a catalyst of sort to the underlying problem, just exacerbating the issue.

Yeah mate, again I have to agree with you. With the recent changes in USA we can now hope the scientists can spend more time and money on investigating the effects of cannabis and we will finally get some scientific information rather than assumptions. Until then it appears we are stuck with sharing our stories on the internet mores the pity :(

hey dude... we need to talk for real. im experienceing very similar problems right now. however i didnt suspect the weed actually. i found out i was allergic to carrots. which included ANY beta carotene. i cant even have vitamin water colored with purple carrot juice. even a minute amount of ANY carrot derived substance makes me get VERY sick.
