If the soil is very dry out of the bag, sprinkle an inch's worth into the cup and mist it a time or two with water. Then throw in another inch, with another mist. Continue until you reach the top of the cup. The soil must be only moist--not wet. I've read several times you should not water a small seedling so much that water drains out of the cup below. The root system is so tiny in its development cycle, they simply do not require so much--it could easily do damage. Once your roots are good and developed and you've transplanted your hearty plant, then you can water the bigger pot until you have about 10% run-off through the bottom.

Since your lights tend to dry things out pretty fast, you'll only have to endure soil misting for less than a month before you transplant.

I'm thinking the coffee filter idea might not be sound. I understand the idea of not wanting the soil to fall out, but a coffee filter can retain a good amount of water for awhile before it slowly drips out. This could mean too much moisture retention for a seedling especially. I use solo cups and drill seven 1/4 inch holes in the bottom only. I've had no problems with soil shaking/leaking out.

Another possible problem (if it's water-related) may be your germination method. I know countless people swear by the paper towel method, but there are really good arguments against it. The couple who own mandala seeds (see their website) are very purist about their germination recommendations, claiming among many things that the paper towel method might seem effective, but could cause problems shortly down the road. They say the same of soaking your seeds in water before planting.

I take an in-between approach and line a matchbox with 100g sand paper, shake them for 30 seconds, drop them in water for 6-8 hours and then plant them in the soil. Matchbox idea I learned from Jorge Cervantes' book.

Hope this helps.

Soil is too hot they are growing retarted,,,lol Thats what I call it anyway. Far from an expert here (3rd grow) but I have had a few do this and come to the conclusion too many nutes in soil. I'm going to find a low nute soil for seedlings only and just give water until about 5" high then transplant into 5 gal of fox farm happy frog for veg. I did tons of research and have had all 3 turn out decent. The hardest part was filtering out the B.S. I also went the expensive route, fox farm and distilled water thoughout grows.

You also said something about giving up. If you do you will regret it. I smoked that trash on the street for yrs. When my first grow was done, I had about a qtr of street weed left, would look at it every now and then and say, how could I ever smoke such bad looking shit. I gave it away a few weks ago. Just so I didn't have to look at it anymore.

With your space I would flower 4 or 5th week from seed or about 10" tall. And only have 2 plants. My opinon 2 wil fill that space good. Don't be scared to prun off leaves, mine have been bushes, off of 2 plants I have been pulling off about a paper grocery bag of leaves throughout grow. Good luck bro, Here is where I started about a yr ago.

Seedlings need no nutes fo the first couple of weeks, if you do feed them, you really need to know what you are doing, or burn them up you will, or worse yet, stress them into a plant you don't want. These plants are at 2 weeks old in this pic and no nutes in a soiless mix. Save the nutes for when the plant has cut it's teeth, a little water and light are all that is needed during this time.

You may want to try an organic seaweed application. seaweed is apparently great for seedlings and promotes root growth. I've enjoyed a good success rate So far with seeds and seedlings, but I've had lots of problems later on with my first grow.

Im running Great White root promoter... Not sure if it works the same way as seaweed but is suppose to promote root growth.

Thank you HMB...

Ok well guys heres a new problem. One of my current seedlings is looking ill does anyone know what this is caused from.

Also ive started germing a few more seeds of the 10 seeds soaking in a damp paper towel in a zip lock bag on top of my satilite reciever. 5 have sprouted 2 really well (over a half inch) and 3 more have sprouted a little but going to give them another day so the tap root can get a little bigger.

Heres some pics if anyone has an idea of why the one is yellowing and the tips are turning brown fill free to advise on a solution.

Looks like nute burn to me. Soil too hot. Some plants accept soil w/ nutes, some get burned. I say just water and let grow for a few weeks. The water only will lessen whatever is burning it. and it will take off ina few days. I just looked up your soil and it might be too hot. My suggestion is to flush the soil, then let it dry, then use for seedlings, That would take away some of the nutes. But that might effect the one that is taking the nutes and doing good. I have never tried to flush soil first, but I have some extra FFOF left over and will use it for seedlings on next grow. We will see. Also these plants are pretty durable, takes alot to kill them.

Your soil looks dry, so I don't think it's over watering. If next set of leaves burn too. I would flush it, just run 3x the water going by size of container. Like I said in earlier post, This is only my 3rd time, far from expert or even good. Think I've been lucky so far. But I did a ton of reading and did learn some things. Water and or transplant into weaker soil. ethier way it will prob. delay growth a few days. I would wait for another set of leaves to see if still getting burnt. If it is, I would flush the soil. After some thought I don't think transplanting is a very good idea. You would have to buy a weaker soil and it would just be a guess at what to use. When straight water will weaken if used for a week or 2, or flushed once.

Thanks for the advise.

I went to lowes today and bought some BURPEE organic seed starting mix. Also picked up some Bio pots. I then put 1/3 sunshine advanced soil in the bottom of the pots then added the BURPEE seed starting mix to top it off. I then took the next 5 seedlings that germ'ed last night and got those started. added a couple of squirts of PH'ed water to moisten the soil and placed them under the light.

The light fixture i have is a 2 foot T-5 4 bulb fixture. HOW CLOSE SHOULD THESE SEEDLINGS BE TO THE LIGHT. It's less than 3 inches is that to close. I have a small fan circulating air in the lower chamber. Also have a fan pulling air out of the cabinet discharged out of the room. My temps are 77F to 78F and humidity is around 45%. Hopefully i have replicated the perfect growing conditions and these come out faster and healthier than the last batch.

Should i try and trans plant the one plant that looks sick in this new soil and see if it helps. Or will it do more harm in transplanting than just letting recover on its own.

Thanks HMB....

20121228_202254.jpgOk well still looking for an answer to this one. Any idea of what would cause this to turn yellow and brown on the tips. One person has mentioned it to be nute burn is that the only reason for this to happen. If so would it be advised to replant it in a soil thats less hot. I bought some more soil ment for seedlings. would transplanting it do more harm than good or is it the right move for a plant in this condition.

if you want good soil, this is what i tell everyone on here. start your own compost heap outside. throw in banana peel, old lettuce, rotten tomato. shit like that. stir it once in a while and shovel dirt on top of the pile. in a few months you will have rich black soil. dont use any fertalizer for the first couple weeks of growing.

Hey brosky!

That is a SICK cab mayne! Glad I stopped by, sucks you're having probs though...

My 2 cents....
I agree that soil is too hot. Not only because of the actual burnt/yellowing tips, but how the other leaves are twisting and curling as well. I had seedlings a little older that showed similar signs, and I just flushed the shit out of my soil to lower the ppms. Considering you have more soil that is less hot, (seedling starter soil) and the girls are young, I honestly would try to transplant them.

In terms of watering I let my girls almost show signs of a lil thirst before I watered. Such as leaves starting to go limp. Like you, my soil dries fast and is not the best method of determining when to water for me. Then I would proceed to water till I saw 10% runoff.

Again just my 2 cents. Judging by the amount of research you have done, and how dope that cab is, I really think 2013 will be a badass year for growing for you!

yea ive got some seed starting mix. the last seed to pop i did a 50/50 mix with the seed strating mix and Sunshine advanced potting soil..
The sunshine advanced seems to be to hot and drys out really fast. the seed starting mix seems to be very fine and has poor drainage so stays mucky and wet (no coco coir). So the last one i did a 50/50 should benefit both ways less nutes and better drainage Hope i come with a good mix for future seedlings. Thanks for looking in hope everything works out.

I use Earthgro (MG) and add 20% perlite. $5 for a 2cuft bag. Wokes great with seeds and clones, but you need good nutes to, for this soil. fyi
Thanks for the info. Thinking of going with hydro next time and eliminating all the soil options and under or over watering. If I cant get this stuff I have now to work I'm not buying more soil.

But thanks for the input. Its a dang weed why is it so difficult to grow.

I would say it has been pretty easy to grow. Seems like the more I worried about the plant, the harder it was to take care of. Your sick one, I would just flush it with 3x the container, with plain water. let plant sit for few days and give just water for a few weeks. I had a seedling not move in growth for 2 weeks. Stayed 2" tall,,,,lol Turned out great weed. Just stick it out and it will evenyually adjust and start growing. No matter what you do it will be stunned in growth. Flushing and just giving water took 2 weeks to come out of it's funk. Transplant might be faster, might be slower too. I don't know enough about soils to get one that I know for sure will work for that particular strain. Also it will grow weird leaves, until it starts to take off. Just have patience. Look at my link below and my very first grow you see 3 or 4 seedlings (can't remember how many) Look at the 4th and 5th pic. the plant on the left is the same age as the tiny one on the right. That soil is FFOF, also look how they have weird growth on lower part. They will look like hell for a few weeks then that growth comes out. I don't know if your adding perlite to your soil, if not you need to do that. I dont have a set amount I just put it in until it looks like enough, I would say 10 to 20%.
