Is there anything that would have stopped Adam Lanza from the massacre?

Liked your idea on ending the drug war and getting help for tortured souls.

Were you aware that there is a law which prohibits the federal government from having a gun registry and that the great majority of guns since the dawn of time are unregistered? Some states have gun registries but most do not.

If I break into your home and burglarize your firearm and then shoot someone and drop the weapon. I get away with it, but you go to prison. Felons cannot own guns so you then lose your right to own a firearm because you went to prison. Does that really sound reasonable to you? Sounds like a wonderful way to fuck over someone who has wronged you in some way, steal their gun and anonymously drop it off at the police headquarters as a "Found" item. Bye bye felon who gets to go to ass rape prison for letting his dog shit on your lawn.

I have purchased many many many weapons without a background check right from the store on a Friday afternoon anyday USA. CWC permit holders do not need background checks, they are assumed to be cleared. FFL holders don't need background checks done either. Neither do C&C holders. You want to close all those down?

Private sales also do not require background checks, you gonna require everyone with $500 to go down to the Sheriffs and fill out paperwork? It isn't even enforceable. How will the law know that I just sold my cousin a derringer for $100 cash?

Assault weapons are already very difficult to own, as all assault weapons are selective fire to be full automatic weapons. Let me guess? You think that semi auto rifles that LOOK like assault weapons are actually assault weapons? Or that anything capable of holding more than 5 rounds of ammunition is an assault rifle? I suggest you actually find out what an assault rifle really is as the media has made you believe their deceitful ways.

My Glock pistol holds 33 rounds of ammo, more than any of my so called "assault rifles" do.

Look, I will admit that I am not up on all of the intricacies of the various gun laws. When suggesting that the process of purchasing a gun needs to be looked at, I'm saying that with people like the Aurora shooter in mind. I will never be convinced that a person should be able to buy a bunch of guns and thousands of rounds of ammo with no questions asked, and no red flags raised. I don't know what the answer is, but to me if you want to buy a gun, it should be registered to you, and the state/feds should be aware of that purchase. If we can figure out how to do it with cars, surely there must be away to apply that to guns.

As far as assault weapons go, again I will plead ignorance. My main point is that a handgun that can fire 5-10 rounds should be sufficient when it comes to protecting your home and family. A weapon that has the capacity to fire off 40, 50, 100 rounds inside of a minute is not something that a civilian needs, nor should own.

I may be missing some points here, so I'm open to being schooled on this, but the above just seems like common sense to me.

I respect your choice, but made a different one for myself. I hope you respect that in return. cn
No, if I don't have guns then it would be in my best interest that no one have them. They are dangerous and they are designed only to kill people and they are very bad.

placing guns in teachers hands is not the answer. that just so happens to be were kids like adam lanza GO TO FUCKING SCHOOL. kids wrestling teachers for a weapon, teacher goes off the deep end, making teachers handle guns or no job? bullshit. way too many factors that can turn into a bad situation. kids are fucking crazy these days and the shit that goes down in schools with no guns is insane. i graduated in 07 and would have been terrified if teachers were carrying guns knowing the fucking nut jobs that i went to school with. hire a cop. done.

30 screaming kids, car broke down, rent going up, county wants to slash teachers wages another 11%, kids not meeting Federal Ed standards, husband was laid off last week. The teacher really does want a gun.

Great thread!

I am fairly liberal on most issues, but something like this deserves some serious conversation, and as such we should all be able to set our political differences aside and work towards some consensus.

Here are my thoughts:

The first move that should be made as a society is a matter of priorities. Step one would be to end the "war on drugs" which costs taxpayers 10 billion annually, and earmark some of that money to be put towards this issue. We could empty our prisons of all non-violent drug offenders, and give them the treatment they need. Second, we could allocate a portion of this money to mental health treatment. This Sandy Hook shooting (and others) highlights the need to make mental health more of a priority.

I also feel we need to send a message where illegal/non registered guns are concerned. If someone is caught with a gun that is not registered to them, they should go straight to prison. 5 years minimum mandatory sentence (I pulled that number out of my ass). The same should apply to legal gun owners who do not take proper safety precautions with their weapons. If your gun is lost/stolen, and is used in a crime, you go straight to prison as well.

In addition we need to close loopholes that allow people to purchase weapons without a background check. People can own their guns, but the process of buying them should be uniform, and stringent. I would also like to see a ban on assault rifles. I'm open to being convinced otherwise, but I just don't see a need for any civilian to own anything other than a handgun for personal protection.
My complaint is with registry. It is ultimately a tool for confiscators. It seems the reasonable thing to do at first glance, but I would only accept registry if it came bundled with an amendment-level law that guaranteed my right to own, carry, use, feed, buy, sell, gift and bequeath any gun and its ammo. No more restrictions on type, chambering, capacity. cn

That is nice and I never indicated that this sort of thing doesn't happen, however, you are mentioning 7 occurances in 15 years. I don't have the stats on mass shootings but we have had quite a number of them. - and one is not even in this country. of the ones you listed, only some were schools. As I asked, should we seek to arm mall cops, managers and church choirs as well?
Ooh ah tah kaw kaw kaw frumph!

For everyone else who doesn't speak your chimp language it means, "you fucking idiot, learn to read. There'd probably be 2,500 more dead, last year alone, if you banned guns!"

"probably", so your conjecture is somehow made fact by virtue of your supposing it, right?

The right to have arms has nothing to do with hunting or protecting yourself from the occasional scofflaw. The reason the framers specifically singled out this particular right was so that you could defend hearth and home from the GOVERNMENT. I dunno bout you, but I know what kind of weapons the GOVERNMENT has , and they are much better than anything I have, but hey, why not nerf me even more so that we have even less of a chance.

At least I'm honest. You left out the "probably" when you said it would be in your best interest if everyone had no guns like you too. You're wrong. Places like Australia prove it. It's more correctly written, "If guns are banned, every law abiding citizen is without a gun. Only criminals have guns if they're illegal."

No disrespect to the families of this tragic event...

Lets just say for shit and giggles that guns are no longer available in the US.
Say i"m a crazy mother F*@$er looking to hurt a group of people, I could use:
All types of flammable gases mixed with all kinds of shit..
acid, not the type you trip on..
knives, swords..
cars, planes..
electricity..
Poissons..

just to many to list, and my point is that gun control may help, but if some one really wants to hurt some one, they will always find a way, gun or no gun..
this is just the sad truth..

guns are incredibly more efficient and as simple as finding change in your couch. all of what you listed is true but just not practical whatsoever. People know this information, thats why we have a fucking gun problem. not an acid problem, or a plane crashing issue, or a dangerous electricity epidemic? your just straying from the subject. were talking about guns dude.

its sad to just say "oh well fuck it, i can't think of any solution or agree with anyone so we can just pretend it didn't happen until it happens again and everyone can be like omg i can't believe it!!!!" im not for banning guns, thats stupid. but we are a careless nation with our weapons. so careless the world fucking laughs at how stupid we are while our children die. i just can't take anymore "well, learn to live with it." it's bullshit.

My belief is this is being staged, all of these shootings are hoaxes, to pursuad us to get rid of our weapons. Why doesnt the Military start with thiers fist? why do the police have military weapons and civilians cannot?

More children die from poisoning, suffocation and car crashes than anything else. Hell the number of children killed by being run over by a vehicle itself is more than the number of children murdered by gun.

When I say children I mean 12 and under to be specific. I don't think there has ever been more than 200 or so children murdered by gun in any given year in the USA. about ten times that number die in car crashes alone.

Its a terrible thing that happened for sure, but it is not possible to disarm US Citizens and trying will only cause a whole heap of trouble where a whole hell of a lot more people die.

Civilians can have full auto weapons, hell you can even have a tank or a piece of artillery if you are so inclined. The cost is not exorbitant and there are ways around some of the laws by using a trust to possess the weapons.

Good riflemen don't use full auto anyway, well aimed shots are much more effective than spray and pray.

Yea my point however is the government would like to see military style weapons not sold to civilians any more. It's not a good thing, that's fore sure.
