Is there anything that would have stopped Adam Lanza from the massacre?

I was being sarcastic

Maybe an armed security guard or two...but arming all the teachers would be flat out retarded
Teachers idea is better than some bored dude in a uniform. Part of the point is to wean Americans from associating guns with uniforms. Jmo. cn

Note that there is rough social equality in Canada, and there is a predominance of privately owned weapons there much like there is here, yet there aren't many mass shootings there either.
Actually, factually and otherwise, if you own a gun in Canada you are most certainly and positively are in the MINORITY. Gun ownership in Canada is less than a third of what it is in the USA.

Canada has had ELEVEN school shootings...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_shooting#Canada

...Did you know.....• A 1997 high school shooting in Pearl, Miss., was halted by the school's vice principal after he retrieved the Colt .45 he kept in his truck.
• A 1998 middle school shooting ended when a man living next door heard gunfire and apprehended the shooter with his shotgun.
• A 2002 terrorist attack at an Israeli school was quickly stopped by an armed teacher and a school guard.
• A 2002 law school shooting in Grundy, Va., came to an abrupt conclusion when students carrying firearms confronted the shooter.
• A 2007 mall shooting in Ogden, Utah, ended when an armed off-duty police officer intervened.
• A 2009 workplace shooting in Houston, Texas, was halted by two coworkers who carried concealed handguns.
• A 2012 church shooting in Aurora, Colo., was stopped by a member of the congregation carrying a gun.
• At the recent mall shooting in Portland, Ore., the gunman took his own life minutes after being confronted by a shopper carrying a concealed weapon. 2500 times last year alone legal gun owners stopped violent crime when confronted with it long before any police assistance ...

That is nice and I never indicated that this sort of thing doesn't happen, however, you are mentioning 7 occurances in 15 years. I don't have the stats on mass shootings but we have had quite a number of them. - and one is not even in this country. of the ones you listed, only some were schools. As I asked, should we seek to arm mall cops, managers and church choirs as well?

not read much of the middle of this thread but

IMO it would be better for the teachers to stay with the children rather than run off around the school looking for targets

as tragic as this incident was it sounds like the staff there did a very good job with the principle alerting people over the intercom and the teachers locking themselves in the class and keeping the children huddled/ calm

an untrained bored guy in a uniform is a really bad idea as he would be targeted first and then the shooter would have an extra weapon

2, 3 or more bored guys in might be answer to that but most schools havent got the money for a fleet of security guards and i wouldnt want my kid at a place with an army of untrained gunmen

Well it would be higher but I gave up my weapons when my daughter was born and never got around to replacing them after she grew up.
OMG what on earth would ever possess you to own a firearm? Don't you know those things kill and are good for nothing but killing other human beings?

Why would the teachers run looking for targets? Of course they stay with their charges. It transfers the need to move to the putative attacker. In the meantime, call cops. No need for uniformed supernumeraries imo. cn

Great thread!

I am fairly liberal on most issues, but something like this deserves some serious conversation, and as such we should all be able to set our political differences aside and work towards some consensus.

Here are my thoughts:

The first move that should be made as a society is a matter of priorities. Step one would be to end the "war on drugs" which costs taxpayers 10 billion annually, and earmark some of that money to be put towards this issue. We could empty our prisons of all non-violent drug offenders, and give them the treatment they need. Second, we could allocate a portion of this money to mental health treatment. This Sandy Hook shooting (and others) highlights the need to make mental health more of a priority.

I also feel we need to send a message where illegal/non registered guns are concerned. If someone is caught with a gun that is not registered to them, they should go straight to prison. 5 years minimum mandatory sentence (I pulled that number out of my ass). The same should apply to legal gun owners who do not take proper safety precautions with their weapons. If your gun is lost/stolen, and is used in a crime, you go straight to prison as well.

In addition we need to close loopholes that allow people to purchase weapons without a background check. People can own their guns, but the process of buying them should be uniform, and stringent. I would also like to see a ban on assault rifles. I'm open to being convinced otherwise, but I just don't see a need for any civilian to own anything other than a handgun for personal protection.

In response to the underlined statement, I don't even need to read what ideas you have particularly or even agree with them to rep you sir. I will go back and finish reading though.

Liked your idea on ending the drug war and getting help for tortured souls.

Were you aware that there is a law which prohibits the federal government from having a gun registry and that the great majority of guns since the dawn of time are unregistered? Some states have gun registries but most do not.

If I break into your home and burglarize your firearm and then shoot someone and drop the weapon. I get away with it, but you go to prison. Felons cannot own guns so you then lose your right to own a firearm because you went to prison. Does that really sound reasonable to you? Sounds like a wonderful way to fuck over someone who has wronged you in some way, steal their gun and anonymously drop it off at the police headquarters as a "Found" item. Bye bye felon who gets to go to ass rape prison for letting his dog shit on your lawn.

I have purchased many many many weapons without a background check right from the store on a Friday afternoon anyday USA. CWC permit holders do not need background checks, they are assumed to be cleared. FFL holders don't need background checks done either. Neither do C&C holders. You want to close all those down?

Private sales also do not require background checks, you gonna require everyone with $500 to go down to the Sheriffs and fill out paperwork? It isn't even enforceable. How will the law know that I just sold my cousin a derringer for $100 cash?

Assault weapons are already very difficult to own, as all assault weapons are selective fire to be full automatic weapons. Let me guess? You think that semi auto rifles that LOOK like assault weapons are actually assault weapons? Or that anything capable of holding more than 5 rounds of ammunition is an assault rifle? I suggest you actually find out what an assault rifle really is as the media has made you believe their deceitful ways.

My Glock pistol holds 33 rounds of ammo, more than any of my so called "assault rifles" do.
