By Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News – The Philippines has the highest wages for workers among third world countries in Asia, according to the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP).This after President Aquino shot down proposals for a P125 across-the-board wage increase during his Labor Day speech.
Data from ECOP showed that the minimum daily wage in Metro Manila stands at almost $10 a day compared to $2.20 in Vietnam, $2 in Cambodia, $2.90-$3.00 in Indonesia,$5.20-$5.90 in Thailand and $3.75-$5.00 in China.
ECOP president Ed Lacson said in a globalized economy, if labor is expensive, exported products and the manufacturing sector will lose.
Asked if the P426 daily mininum wage would be enough for the expenses of a family of 6, Lacson said the assumption is there are more than one employed family member so the daily wage is augmented.
ECOP earlier said it will push for around P8 hike in daily wages but will follow whatever is approved by the wage board.

Paying someone less than because they are not an American is well..."Un-American".
No one said that, we have Americans as live in nannies for 500 to 600 a month. I was just showing how full of shit chesus was by presenting the true facts not some bullshit alter reality he is trying to portray.

I don't think that was his intent, he was trying to pull heartstrings with a overly dramatic article without filling in the blanks. For example 80% of the Filipino population makes a day what she makes an hour. In her home country she would make closer to 20cents an hour. The entire culture their is prepping people to get the hell out so they can send money back. A huge portion of their economy relies on abroad workers, you can find lines miles long (no exaggeration) to fill in her place.

That argument is bullshit.

That's equivalent to saying: "Well, in Bob's home country of Serbia he's likely to be murdered by gang related activity, so there's nothing wrong him getting his ass kicked for having a funny accent."
Fact of the matter is, we're not the Philipines, nor are we Serbia. If you don't pay minimum wage here, especially when you earn far more than most, you're a piece of shit. Doesn't matter where the workers' country origin may be.

39-year-old Albany, NY, socialite, Annie George, has been accused of a forced labor situation and is being brought up on federal charges. The maid she hired from Kerala, India, was paid $0.85 an hour for 67 months where she worked 17-hour days, 7 days a week, and was forced to sleep in a bedroom closet so she would never be away from the children she was watching over. The house the maid was “paid” to keep up is a $30,000,000, 12 acre, 30,000 square foot estate with 24-karat gold gilded ceilings, an indoor swimming pool, and a helicopter pad.

Nice road in front of that house she could have walked down. Right down to the unemployment office and found a better job. If not, well in the mean time all she had to do was play house wife or live on the streets.

Was she just waiting around for batman to save her or something? Wtf, was the front door locked?

All her needs.were met, and even at 85 cents an hour, could been high the whole time, eating well, dressed well, in a 30 million dollar home takin care of kids all day. Fuck.sign me up for that gig for real.

Bank documents and witness statements corroborated V.M.’s statement that the Georges never paid her all of what she was owed, and the $29,000 they did pay her was made in sporadic payments by money transfers to her son in India.
Phone conversations between V.M.’s son and Annie George showed that George acknowledged she was aware that V.M. lacked a passport and visa. She urged V.M.’s son to lie and say his mother was a relative of the Georges.
“If she says anything about working, it would become a big crime,” George said in one of the recordings to V.M.’s son. “They’ll start adding up all the taxes and everything for all this time.”
