I see a lot of this going on. I'm not sure I see the value in the points count/rep titles so can someone clue me in on what these are actually for??

Could a high rep person be mistaken for someone with experience and knowledge on the subject through the board, even if they have never done anything themselves?

I see that to be a bit misleading. When someone posts, I'll take into consideration those two things and I really shouldn't be. A lot of knowledgeable people are here without "Mr. Ganja" titles.

Couldn't you use the buddy system to just +rep each other? How is rep earned exactly? I have gained reputation, but I'm not really sure why. All I did was try my best to help the board as best as the board as helped me with certain things. If I had input on something where I thought could help, I would suggest it.

I dunno about you guys, but I would rather stay the new guy and know a thing or two, than be a mr ganja and know nothing :)

any thoughts?

There will always be Rep and Post Hogs with little experience. Normally they are the young kids on the forum.
Just the way it be.
I don't pay much attention to Rep or post count.
Most Forums are 90% BS with 10% good info.

For me, post count and rep are consequences, side effects really, of me having fun on this forum. I'd be (and I was ) the same weird cat with 240 posts and one green dot. cn

Also, why is there only a "like" function, or a +rep?

Why couldn't people tag someone as a negative user?

ex: if I was being completely rude and out of line, someone could -rep me? if I post something, why couldn't someone "dislike" it. Sometimes negative feedback towards a person can benefit them. They see that what they said looked bad to other people when the person who posted it really didn't think they were being offensive and change how their actions are in the future?

Of course, some people won't care and will rack those points up just to be smart asses about it.

But, some people simply need to be told when they are out of line, and I think a -rep or dislike function could keep people from posting without actually thinking what they are posting and how their posts can be perceived. Maybe for that function, anyone can dislike whatever, but to -rep, you would have to have say, 10 different people within the post say that you deserve -rep. That way, you don't have 1 or 2 people going around -rep everyone. It would have to be a forum decision.

the rep bars have nothing to do with a members growing experience or knowledge. do not use that as a factor in deciding to listen to a persons grow advice or not

once again, those titles are just for entertainment value. post count and the title that accompanies it shouldn't be used in judging one's growing advice or skill

you could use the buddy system to +rep each other, it happens a lot. also reputation is not always earned, it's mostly just given. but trying your best to help the forum, giving sound advice, helping others, just stoking someone else's day with something you say, is always a plus. it makes you a standout member of the community in time without being said.

I like to be the guy who knows a thing or 2, but stays just as humble as the new guy who knows nothing ;)

SOLID. I was just making sure I didn't have the wrong idea here. Sounds like we think alike on this one.
