I think some of their demise may also be due to the competition being better. I haven't had any desire to snack on any of the hostess brands you named since the 80s.
Personally, I won't be mourning their loss.

You mean cheaper. That happens when you don't have to pay someone 30 bucks and hour clicking a lever.

yea, because shortening is in no way related to animal lard replacement. I don't eat any of that stuff anyway.

A company that reports a revenue of 2.5 billion in fy2011. Yup, competition did them in.

I use expeller pressed non-hydrogenated shortening in things like pie crusts and tortillas only. You can use sugar, flour and liquid in different ratios to make cakes and bread like baking. Healthy doesn't need be bland.Mine taste than Hostess.

There was a paleontologist on Colbert Report ( yea i know) that said humans would have never evolved a brain if they didn't start eating meat. When they where vegetarians they spent %80 of the calories just for digestion. This meant they developed more efficient digestive tracks , but still had to constantly search for food. When they started eating meat the small high calorie meals didn't require as much energy to digest and they now had a surplus. This surplus went into developing a bigger brain verses better digestive track.

I was just saying original shorting that was used in desserts was animal lard & shouldn't be taboo for desserts. People didn't have the technology to make these synthetic lards form veggies yet.

In the past two years vegans in the US doubled. More and more people realize taste isn't an excuse for cruelty. Also, all my desserts taste better than any store bought. It's because I use REAL ingredients.

I've eaten Phoney Bologna and faking bacon, and some bean burgers, the burgers were passable, I thought they were pretty good, Also had vegan chili that was really good, I didn't miss the meat.

Revenue is not the same as profit, big guy . Their management and financial officers mad poor decisions and ran them into the ground with unsustainable debt levels. Sure unreasonable union demands didn't help, but not the sole reason.
