The two oldest boys, in their teens, got the bright idea of proposing to do the work themselves at the same price, using our simple hand saw and ladder. Indeed they did, toiling away some fifteen hours or so between themselves but seemed to have lots of fun in the process."

i wouldn't have my kids cutting down any tree of a reasonable size especially using a ladder (even if using a hand saw)

Would they ever be trusted to not saw off their arm with a handsaw, or are your kids forever untrustworthy? I understand the nervous parent thing, I raised four kids, but at some point you have to let them grow up and that means allowing them to take judicious risks.

You don't trust your kids to climb a ladder? Really? My kids are practically gibbons as far as I can tell.

cutting limbs off trees while on a ladder is never safe even with a hand saw

health and safety isn't just a bore for adults

climbing trees is a different matter thats their time

the article promoted what it thought was good parenting/ work ethic for children but not so much good employer ethics for parents

Like everything in life, such things are a trade off. My opinion is that it is good experience for a kid to climb a ladder and cautiously saw off a limb after first considering what could go wrong and mitigating those hazards.

The article is not about climbing trees, it's about teaching kids the value of a buck and some pretty good life skills.

i didnt comment on the rest of the article just the glaring bad advice on trees

if you want your kids to know what happens when you off balance a tree by cutting off limbs then you get them to watch a trained contractor

sticking them up a ladder with a saw is an accident waiting to happen

and visits to the emergency room (thats if your lucky enough for it not to be a morgue) is expensive in the libertarian world

Do they still get paid if the tree falls on them maiming or even killing them?

I would assume that in this case any pay owed to them would revert to their parent as guardian of a minor child. This made me think of the age old conundrum... "if a tree falls on a child laborer and no one is around to hear his agonizing death rattle... does he truly make a sound?"

hehehe... i was just fucking around. i have always encouraged my kids to work... even with power tools at a reasonable age.

She is a second degree black belt
She doesnt need luck
She needs to watch whats she is doing and listen to her old man sometimes

This is the kid that after i told her to take off her roller shoes she decided to fall down the stairs
That was 3 years ago and she still makes bad decisions like all kids
