Do it yourself rockwol using coco

Ok... First off I am no where close to any kind of hydro store or the such, so I'm pretty limited to mostly buying off the internet. That being said, I'm posting this as a noob, on my first grow, and if this has been done before and credited to someone else, someone chime in.

Now in the planning stages of my grow I had considered ebb and flow and read about the hempy? setups and using coco fiber. Being as fibrous as the stuff is it seemed like a good medium that just made sense as far as holding water while still maintaining some aeration. Well I knew it wasn't write the same, but while shopping one day and browsing the garden section I came across those coco basket liners they use for hanging wire pots for like .75 cents apiece. So I figured why not get some on the cheap and just she'd the crap up?

Well I went dwc, and found myself needing some cubes to grow in. Since I have a bunch of seeds, like to experiment, and I'm cheap... I decided to make cubes with the coco.

I started with the rounds of coco fiber by cutting them into quarters, then strips, then approx 3/4 squares. Then after producing a bunch of the squares, I matched them by size and stacked them together about an inch or so in width. I secured them with what I had handy, rubber bands. Then I soaked them overnight in a water and slight h2o2 mix, and dried them out in the oven set at 200 to make sure they were sterile. Afterwards I tested one cube by letting it soak in a glass of water overnight, testing the Ph before and after, noticing no difference.

One thing that is cool with my little set up is germing. I'm doing two seeds per cube, one cube per net pot. I know that's not normally recommended but that's how I'm rolling. Anyway if you have a dead seed you can gently take the coco apart and combine it with another section of another cube with growth in it.

Anyway....that's what I got going. Maybe have .03 cents in each cube, totally renewable, cheap resource.

Second time someone on this forum has mentioned that, and being in an old school southern town with some progressive thinking, i've thought about trying to introduce hydro as a way for folks to have indoor gardens in the spaces above their two door garages. Only problem is credit, and the fact I'm growing...so I would surely be investigated!

Good job trying new things out. We can't progress if we don't try. I would say if you are going to experiment always have a sure thing on the side. So that time you are experimenting, you still have something to show for your time. Growing takes a decent amount of time sucks to try something new and have problems and bad yeilds. Then that time is lost. Hope things work out.

Um. Seriously... No one else has tried this? Seems so simple and Bohemian. I mean my plants are doing good (I think) considering I tried to kill them. Since I'm doing dwc with these I thought someone would jump on and blame my ignorant noob take on kiss. Shit, give me a reason that my plants will die before harvest so I can blame it on something now!

I however love anything that is multi purpose and straight smart thinking,......
