What do you mean by rinsing charcoal?

Ok so I'm building a carbon filter, I have activated charcoal pellets that I will pour in a pipe with holes drilled on it.
What I'm wondering is as the topic suggests; what does it mean to rinsing charcoal? The guide I'm reading
says that before we pour in the charcoal we rinse it, how does one do that and what does it mean?

I can only imagine that rinsing charcoal would be bad ... it would fill or injure the sites on the coal that should absorb odor. I'd skip that step. If you're using good charcoal in the first place, you don't want to do anything to inactivate it before use. cn

thats before you put it in aquarium water. as for a filter you want screen it somehow or expect a big puff of dust to come out and prepare for that.

Not sure if this is the answer you looking for but maybe that is for water charcoal filters. I know before installing new charcoal filters for water they say to rinse them first. I had a water dispenser where the water tank had build in filters. You had to rinse the black stuff out before you could use them otherwise you would get sediment in your water. Also aquariums that use charcoal filters for the water, some people rinse the charcoal off with soapy water every month to make it last longer. Did you try googling info on it?

I assume your using yours for airflow so I would just skip it.

The guide I read was actually on a cannabis grow site and would be used for air-filtering. I suspect that it has something to do with getting rid of carbon dust since when I puored in the pellets in the pipe there were some dust coming out... How could one do to get rid of that before use? Feels like the dust might clog the hose I will be using as a filter to keep the pellets from falling out..

I would not rinse the charcoal before putting it in your filter, humidity makes carbon filters less effective over time and eventually useless, so i cant think of any reason anyone would do that and this is the first i have ever heard of it being practiced.

I forgot to mention, both my non-homemade carbon filters were real dusty at first. It never said anywhere to rinse them in either of the instructions. One is a small 4 inch. The other is a giant 8 inch. They work amazing but are kinda expensive. If you make your own and get them to work great then damn that is cool! Good luck!

Pack your filter, attach a fan (outdoors?), and run for a few minutes. Turn off and on a few times. Tap the canister with something soft like a running shoe. that should leave it effectively dust-free.
I used mine "as purchased" and didn't notice a problem. i would have ... next stop was the glass in my vented hood. cn

I read somewhere that rinsing your used carbon filter can get another couple months out of it, or at least some light duty work. It has to be dried in the sun though.

I've not tried this yet, but I do have one rinsed and ready. The metal frame rusted a bit so I'll probably just trash it some day.
