After 18 years of loyal companionship, a Wisconsin man is trying to comfort a dear friend through his final days of life.


A photo of John Unger holding his shepherd mix in a lake as the dog sleeps has gone viral, the image portraying the incredible bond between man and dog.
A professional photographer, Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, took the photo near Bayfield’s Reiten Beach in Lake Superior. Unger, 49, had asked her to chronicle his peaceful moments in the lake with dog Schoep, who is suffering from arthritis, the Duluth News Tribune reported.


Unger adopted Schoep 18 years ago as an abused puppy. He said he had long wanted to have a portrait taken with his pet, and after seeing Schoep limping, he knew it was time.


“What was going through my mind when Hannah was taking those pictures was that this may be the last time I’m going to be swimming with him,” Unger said.
Unger said his dog has been with him through ups and downs, including a painful breakup.


“I just want to do whatever I can for this dog because he basically saved my ass,” he said.

Going to the local dog pound and taking a dog home with me has been one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. I have done this many times and will continue to do so. I live to spend time with my dogs and the love and appreciation they show me is without paralell.

I have had the great fortune to have been included in the lives of 2 fantastic dogs. One has been gone for a little over 3 yrs a boxer named Bizkit
Who made many of my bad days better by just being there and showing me what unconditional love was all about..She was truly a fantastic dog and the whole family cried when we had to put her down. I have to say that for a long time aftrewards I felt quilty about making the decision to have her put down. I swore that I would never allow myself to become so attached to another animal nd then in moment of weakness I picked up another puppy who had to be one of the ugliest in canine history and quickly became a loved member of our family who happens to be sitting at my feet as I type this and even though she is no longer a puppy and is still a little on the homely side to me and my family she is the most beautiful dog in the world.
We look forward to many more years of unconditional love and companionship from our beloved friend!

putting down our our dog had to be one of the shittiest days of my life ww.. i went to take him for a walk after he had fallen asleep in his own urine on the porch, which he laid in for a few hours napping...
he did great coming down the steps, but only a few hundred yards from my house it became quite clear that he wasn't long for this world.. my roomy had asked a week or two earlier if it was time, and i selfishly said no.. but after he almost fell over several times on the walk, i could no longer deny his time with us was coming to an end...
the thing was, he was a mean, nasty thing at the best of times, but he was ours, and we loved him dearly and was part of the family for years.. still, despite every mean bone in his body, i still miss him all of the time..

we have since gotten a new puppy, something i didn't think i'd ever be able to handle after losing bear like that, but she's a real charmer, and nothing like mean ole bear was.. she's quickly gained the hearts of everyone in the neighborhood, not to mention what she's able to get away with with us, lol... i love animals...

Almost lost my golden one Bruce he swalowed a golf ball when we were out for a walk i didn't see him swalow it the next day he didn't seem him self then within a hour he was sick alover the floor drink alot of water but he just bought the water up again.
So i took him to the vets they xrayed him seen the ball it caust me about £400 to get it out lol he will eat any thing he never has his head out the bin lol.

Where i take them for walkies there are gypsys camped fukin hate there fukin dogs Bruce tryed to hump one yesterday he is a dumb ass as it was anuther male didn't stop him having fun lol.
The gypsys were not to happy could have been wores could have been him my dog was humping.

What a cutie pie. Where I'm moving they won't allow a pet over 12 pounds and my cat weighs more than that. Luckily I was just put on the condo board last week so that will change if I have anything to do with it.

yah, it's awful, i agree ww.. i tend to get attached very easily, especially to a flea bag, lol... idk, they tug at our heart strings for sure and really tend to get my number rather quickly..

it is a sin that they don't have longer lives... bear went down hill rather quickly thankfully, but it was still sad to watch it all happen and not be able to do much to help...

and lol at you having a cat bigger than 11 pounds, lol... reminds me of my sisters cat, that thing is a porker..

on a side note, how are you adopting to the new environment ww?? i hope ok..

Last week it was in the 90's and humidity over 85% for most of the week. Whoa. I broke a sweat just breathing.

We're back in MI right now getting the house ready for the closing next week. I don't think I'll make the deadline.

Side note: Got home today went out for dinner at my favorite bar and got sick from it. Puked my guts out. That'll teach me to move.
