Look. The plant lives to survive. Period. It is a very forgiving mistress. Hydroponics? Different story with EC and pH and instant death. In dirt don't overwater, don't overnute, don't overwater, use plenty of light, don't overwater. Ad infinitum. Feed, water, water. Feed, water, water. One time a week in 5 gallon containers in average conditions.
I just pinch the thing and never have a set back. No sterile blade (for my psilocybin crops yes!) or anything else. Pinch HIGH - right under the bud base. Leave as much stem as possible and it will heal itself quickly and cease demand on a growing plant. Never had one say ouch. I tie tall sativas sideways after topping 4 to 6 times and braid them like a grapevine. I then keep topping the sidebud tips. The yield is killer and it has a lot of nice top colas from base to tip. Outside tie it to a big pumpkin vine for a while and nobody will spot it unless they stumble on it or do it themselves. Pinch.
