Autos in hydro system?

My 1st grow didnt turn out so well so i was thinking about going with autos this time around. but someone told me that autos and hydroponics dont really mix well.. can someone shed some light on this cant really find any good info. If any one has any prior experience growing autos inhydro or knows of a strain that flourishes in a hydro system feel free to comment!

I was leaning towards the auto ultra lemon haze and world of seeds auto afghan kush ryder heard some good shit about these strains. im looking for quantity over quality tho so if anyone knows of a high yielding auto let me know asap

i did autos in DWC. no problem at all. it's actually very popular in the UK now.

just don't forget they have a different feeding regime then fotoperiods. you start bloom nutes much after they have shown sex, towareds the end of their streach.

K.I.T., I tried to post this yesterday, but the forum was having issues and my post wouldn't take:

I just harvested an Auto growing DWC and would have gotten better results were I not sharing the same closet with some photo period plants that had the lights at 12/12.

Whoever told you that you cannot do autos in hydro is full of shit. My La Musa auto was pretty successful. I can't help you with high yielding strains, but I would check out Delicious Seeds both La Diva and La Musa. Under the right conditions, people in the Auto forum are frequently posting 2 zips as the Yield per plant.

Honestly, I would worry about getting the set-up and conditions right before worrying about yield. Start with an auto, if you insist on going that route, that thrives in most conditions and is easy to grow and then go from there.

do you keep your ppm in check? thats about the only thing i dont keep track off i just feed them at low strengths to start and adjust from there

Yes, I keep track of my PPM and adjust as necessary. It's the only way I've been able to tell whether the plant was feeding on the nutes or just drinking the water.

If the first grow wasn't successful i would do a round of soil. ( i started with hydro first, loved it, now i do both) Soil is very forgiving to new growers. If you are going to be going hydro then you must pick up a ph and ppm meter. Hydro just doesn't work without ( only person i have seen do this is a drain to waste system, and his nutes with tap water buffered to a perfect 5.5 ph.)

PH and ppm together tell you what the plant is doing.
After you start a fresh rez. wait a day, then test it again. If ph is rising and ppm is falling that means the plants are drinking more nutes than water and its ok to up the nute dose next time, whereas if the ph falls and ppm rises its drinking more water than nutes and would like a less concentrated batch.

When my PPM shoots up, that tells me that the plant is drinking but not eating. So I top off with water which dissolves the nutes level back down. PPM (parts per million) is just a way of expressing TDS....Total Dissolved Solids. When I check the next day, I compare the PPM from where I left it. If It goes down, then I know the plant was eating more than drinking and I then top off with a batch of nutes I have sitting in a gallon jug. If the PPM stays the same, then I know that the plant is drinking and eating (which is what you want) and I top off with a combination of water and the nutes I have in the gallon jug.

IMO, having a TDS meter is critical to doing hydro. You can get pretty accurate meters for about $15 bucks on Amazon or Ebay. PH meters are good to have too, but you can also check your PH with the solution drops (and these are good to have to check against your digital PH meter if you have one of those).

I keep my water level just below or right at the bottom of the net pot. Every 24 hours I check it, and without fail the water is down 3-4 inches.

I am a new grower, but Bigz2277 is telling you the right things and he helped me on my first. Others around here like BigBuddaCheese will tell you the same things and I really developed this technique after looking at his grow and asking him questions. Before, I would just swap out my Bucket on a weekly basis and not worry about PPM.

Careful doing this john. Leaving nutes in stagnant water for more than a day or so is no bueno, Id recomend filling a big cooler up with a batch of nutes and throw and airstone in there to keep things going. Plus all the water your plants get has already been oxygenated.

Hey,great info man .. if my tap water is reading 120 PPM already how do i keep it in range after adding the nutes?. Or do i have to lower this or use different water ?. Thanks & good luck to all with every grow!

Add that to the final ppm you want to feed at. If you are trying to feed at 400ppm then your meter should read 520 ppm when done.

Would it kill you to know my place of residence is 0-10ppm - city water no less.

I haven't played much in hydro, but couldn't the rate of pH changes and nutrient changes as well as observation in plants equate to knowing what specific nutrient is in need? Micronutrients would be more difficult in this manner but the major nutrients seem like they could all fit in. NPK, Ca, Mg etc.
