April, you seem to have a lack of faith in firearms. I find this disturbing. As a gun rights advocate, I have to tell you that the pros of having lots of guns far outweigh the cons. The vast majority of thefts around here don't include weapons. Most of the home invasions involve knives, bats, hammers, that sort of thing. Swarmings is knives and sticks.

My door is unlocked and my windows are open, why? Because I don't have to worry about some fucked up asshole, who shouldn't be allowed a gun in the first place, comming into my house and shooting the place up. And even if I did have a gun, it's locked up seperately from the ammo.

Dissenting opinion. There are two major groups of gun owners: the tool users and the firearm worshippers. Most of the violent nutjobs are in category B. There is no valid test for which group a prospective gun buyer would fit, however. If there were, one could reasonably expect gun violence to decrease.
But imo I see two very good consequences of the core of US gun laws:
1) The right to not own a gun is as important as the right to own one imo. I am not fond of the Swiss example, in which all men are members of the nationa militia and are issued a gun and ammo, but should you arrive at the periodic muster/reserve training with your ammo pack's seal broken, expect severe consequences.
2) As there is no valid test for the gun loons, I would like to see the system (beyond simply paying lip service to the Bill of Rights) presume innocence until a firearms use violation (a real one, not a technicality created by the firearms equivalent of the Fed/State med-weed law disconnect) occurs, and then the violator can be punished and restricted.

This is one of those cases where its impossible to stop some ppl from owning guns without impeding on everyone elses rights. The system works decently, especially here in CA where gun laws are fucking strict as shit. No personal transactions and a 10 day wait on new guns. No assault rifles unless they have 1. no pistol grip or 2. a fixed magazine. You have to be 21 to own a firearm. You have to have a gun lock in order to take your gun home.
