Growing and Selling Plants Question

Hi all. I've been growing mints, basil and other kinds of plants and I've started to become interesting in selling them. I have a problem though on how to price them right. I know you add the cost for the pot and soil that you use but how do you do the price for the plant its self like do you ad on x amount of money per month for how old it is or what?

If you can't figure out the pricing part maybe your future is not in sales.

charge by pot size. bigger pots cost more, and plants are bigger. check out the pricing at local garden centers. sell niche plants. heirlooms, hard-to-find, etc.

Its not that I my future isn't in sales since I've bought computer parts sold them as is, built computers with them and sold them and built and sold custom computers. I've also sold lucky bamboo plants to. The problem is that I don't want to over price some thing then what its worth or under price it for what I can get for it.

I have been looking around but I have a question. I see that the priceing labels for herb plants say 4cm , 6cm 7cm 9cm ect.


What does it meen when it says ie 9cm like is it how tall the plant its self is or how tall the bottom of the pot to the top of the plant is or what?

Also I am planing on selling mostly herb plants that can be only bought via plants or plant cuttings for a bit since i know those are gonna be some thing some people are gonna want more and better for pricing if I wanna sell them during the seasons they aren't selling the plants at the store.

that's how it is in the nursery business, with nursery pots. a 10" potted plant comes in a pot with a 10" dia.

Oh ok now that makes sense thank you. =)

So now knowing that the 9cm part is about should I price the plant its self on its size compared to the ones at the garden centers or how should I go about doing that?

What I look for in herb plants are more of a straight shot growth type of plant. (Kinda like a plant grown from seed and not bent to make them look bigger but a freshly rooted cutting grown like that.)

You got to Price above the summer prices a bit during winter months, most stuff sold during summer is slighty dicounted
to dump stock! Winter months cost more to produce and grow! Ie heat/electric the fact they must be grown indoors and not
outside.

charge 1/2 of what they do to start;)
price up from there as your skills at propagating grow, and the product gets better. i sell seedlings on Craigslist in the Spring, and have worked in the nursery business. i'm not talkin' thru my hat.

Roughly how much should a plant be price higher during the winter time over the summer price?

Well I know my ability to root mint plant cuttings is good since I took 12, filled a shot glass with water and got 100% rooted rate.

Its hard to say! I mean theres not alot of money to be made plus you dont want to break even either!
everything has to be acounted for, cost wise! Then you figure your proffit margins

mint will root on top of your head if you leave it there..........lol. its invasive. i mean all-around propagating experience. it shows on the shelf.

So far I've done mj propagating, lucky bamboo, 5 different kinds of mint, basils, 2 different types of ivy plants and African Violet. That's all the things that I've propagated so far.

I will say that I have some experience propagating but not alot that's for sure.

Didnt mean to sound dismissive, its just that when it comes to selling there is one rule. Sell for as much as someone will pay for.

Giving local prices or a pricing structure is pointless as it will vary dependent on where you live and local competition.

Low value plants like mint will only go for a couple of £ or $ wherever you are.

scrog was right when he said mint will grow on your head, same goes for basil (related to mint) and Ivy. LOL. If somebody asked the three easiest plants to propagate I would have said those.

Well from what I've seen online and news papers my only competition that has listings is local garden/home supply stores. I know there's a local flee market by here but there's not much for people selling live plants so I'm pretty much for all I know competing with is the $5+ for potted plants but I will keep that in mind if I see others selling the same plants as me.

Well if theres a market near by that may be an opportunity. Obviously because they grow slow organising and growing many plants is going to be the most important thing..... Wont make you a million but I can't think of a better lifestyle business.

I guess your thing will be to look for interesting plants with the highest markup.
Im big on roses, propagated a few and not too difficult. My brother grows and sells Chilli's. With Chilli's and other produce you can also make products like sauces which add value.
