I just used this term in another post, and it got me to thinking....what does the "a" actually mean? Obviously the phrase itself means basically the same as "damned straight".

May be, but the phrase was being used before awesome became popular. And it's not only used in the context you described. Like someone says the 49ers are the best team ever, a fan might say fucking a in agreement.

Maybe the a means something like "affirmative"?
