i got my federal tax refund the other day and want to cash it. i closed out all my checking and savings accounts with banks last year, but still retain a few credit cards with them as i pay them down.

i just love calling my banks knowing the answer to this question:

me: hello, i am a customer of yours and have a have a tax refund check, can i cash it there?
bank: do you have a checking account?
me: no, just a credit card.
bank: sorry, we can't cash your check then.
me: so a check from the federal government is no good?
bank: not without a checking account.
me: that's not what you said last time they gave you a check.
bank: have a good day sir.
me: fuck you.

i just love how their voices drop at the end after i mention "the last time they gave you a check", it reminds me of a dog with its tail between its legs.

seriously, fuck these people. bunch of assholes. :-P

You want something for free... how am I not surprised.
how dare a customer of bank X try to cash a check at bank X!

i'm happy to pay the $5 fee or whatever, but most of them won't even cash the check without a checking account, as if the check is no good to them.

i just LOL.

You want a customer service operator to take the brunt of your disgust for this current administration?
i believe it was george w. bush who signed into law the TARP bill.

no legislation passed by any president precludes any bank from cashing a check from the fed gov.

what you talkin' about willis?

You said you didn't have a checking account... that would NOT make you a customer of bank X's checking services...

You're essentially saying - "I walked into Burger king and ordered a cheese burger, now I want a whopper for free."

banks cash checks for their customers, right?

i'm happy to pay whatever fee they have, but they literally will not cash a check from the fed gov. to walmart i go.

So you are going to use Walmarts fee based banking services... Wait, you have no problem with paying a fee to cash a check, you just think that all banks need to offer that service because you say so? Why not just use Walmart or any of the other fee based cash checking services and not complain?

When you have overhead and need to pay employees you cannot offer free services without loosing money... That's super super super simple econ lesson 101.
lol @ loosing money.

what free service are you talking about? i am willing to pay them the $5 to cash the check on top of the interest payments on my credit card. they refuse to cash the check.

they weren't so asshole-ish last time the fed gov wrote them a check.

"I like to walk into shoe stores and yell at them for not serving pizza! I think they should offer that service because I say so!"

"I think the government should mandate everything I want!!! Wahhhhh!"

i think as a customer of these banks, they could recognize the validity of my check without making me open up a ripoff checking account. i closed those accounts last year for a good reason, ya know.

i guess you enjoy a banker's cock up your ass.

Or I know something about how banks operate? You say you have a Visa card? But claim the bank is making money off of you... yeah... No savings account, no checking account, you pay no monthly fees to the bank, keep no money with them... totally man... they really owe you.

I don't understand your complaint. There are dozens of places that will cash a check for a fee - you want to go to the few places that don't offer this service and bitch? I never go to the 24hr photo developer and bitch because they won't process my film in an hour... that would just be silly.

you pay monthly fees to your bank to hold your money? dumbass.

i would pay a monthly fee to a bank if they lend me money, like with a credit card. that makes sense.

but to pay someone to hold your money that they use to make money? well, that's full retard.

if i weren't so shellshocked from my experience with the TBTF banks, i would have opened up a credit union account, where they do things like pay you interest for the honor of holding your money. hell, my wife's credit union gives her free stuff all the time for the honor of holding her money.

you know how ripoff banks operate. it wasn't the way they operated for most of my lifetime, though.

Banks make money from holding your money and investing it... If you have no money with them they cannot do this - they actually pay you monthly if you do this though (I'm assuming you've never had a savings account). You are telling us that you are a "customer" that pays the bank NOTHING, they earn NOTHING from you, but they owe you... How does that work?
