Rockwool fibers and lung cancer?

Well wet rockwool is fine but I see fine fibers on the bottom of the tray when everything dries in between flood cycles. And to top it all off the fan is blowing that stuff around the growroom.

Rockwool fibers are forever in the lungs as I read warnings on the web. I'm thinking this is my last grow with this stuff.

Anybody else worried about breathing in Rockwool fibers. This stuff is like asbestos.

It's used for exterior insulation when applying stucco to buildings. They don't wet the stuff and around some construction sites you can see it blown around everywhere, even several blocks from the site.

Pffft. Rock wool is fine...fiberglass, rock wool, rock slag insulation, etc. was taken off of OSHA's list of carcenoginic materials over 10 years ago. It's the single most tested building material of the last 50+ years. It is nothing like asbestos.

What im thinking with Rockwool is that this stuff lasts forever. It doesnt break down over time. It is small enough to be inhaled so if it gets into your lungs its there for good.


I'm switching to something else...

just dont let it dry out. if your worried about breathing it in wear a dust mask or a respirator mask.

Whatever makes you sleep better at night man... peat pucks are fine... they will just break down into your res in hydro.. after the first water change though you're golden. I use rockwool, but I agree with the others that it's not carcenogenic..handle it delacately when it's dry, but I do that more to not crush the air pockets in the spun rock... but - to each their own. It won't hurt the plants or your sucess rate at all to do it another way if you're worried about it.

As a side note, if you correctly soak and rinse your rockwool cubes you may find the whole problem of fibers on your tray will go away.

I was concerned about rockwool since every time I handled it dry I'd cough like a mofo. If it's carcinogenic I ain't touching it anymore. I guess I'm gonna go do some homework. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a carcinogen...what the hell isn't nowadays. Just so u know...if u smoke ganja, it too has plenty cancer causing crap in it. I'm gonna go back into my vaccuum chamber now...peace

It's not carcinogenic... unless you have pussy american lungs... http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/hlthef/finemineral.html .. just kidding.. just thought it was funny that the US was the only country to say it was a factor in mortality.. but so is a big mac in the US I guess.

Just so you know...There have also been some major press releases regarding the difference between tobacco smoke and marijuana smoke.. so far there have been no concrete findings that marijuana smoke causes cancer in humans... please show me where you get that from? do a Google search "carcinogens in marijuana".. and start reading.
