HPS/MH Flower Lighting

I have been using 2 HPS for flowering. Recently I have been doing research and found out that if I use both the HPS and MH for flowering I will get the full spectrum and better crops. Right now I am using a 1000 and 600w HPS in flowering the middle of the 4th week.

Question is; would it be alright to switch out the 6oow HPS for a 600w MH at this stage of the grow? If not , I'll just wait till the next time around.

go with the HPS for flowering and the MH for veg, it just works that way....someone will come in and talk about spectrum and lumens, but dont reinvent the wheel.

not sure if it will actually help you or not. i figure if it would help more people would do it? idk but it shouldnt hurt your plants

jesus - Just still kinda researching. Not trying to reinvent anything. My mind is a sponge and I like soaking information up

drolove - I have both the bulbs now. Many times over. But thanks for the heads up and I will look into them for future consideration

Hey bud, it is actually a good idea in flower but you want about 3-1 ratio between HPS and MH. The ideal way to do it is with MH vertical bulbs hanging in the canopy while your HPS is overhead. With only 1600w in flower though it might be a litte difficult for you to incorporate that into your setup. The one thing that holds most smaller growers back on this is the extra cost and heat produced. If I were you I would look into adding veg spectrum CFL's to your grow. Have them hanging in your canopy and I think you will notice a difference.

Your research is well-founded... I run three 250W HPS and one 400W MH during flowering, and two 250W HPS and a 400W MH and a 250W MH during veg. I used to do it the cut and dry "MH for veg and HPS for flower"-way, but not only have my yields significantly increased with using both types, but I also seem to get more females from regular seed, and have tighter internodal spacing, resulting in bushier, more hearty plants. I recommend this over the dual-arc type lamps, because with those, u r only getting partial benefits of each spectrum, instead of full-blown lumens and spectrums from both types together... Plants DO seem to really thrive under this type of lighting, and with added CO2, and awesome all-natural, organic soil mixes, you will grow some of the sweetest, dankest nugs you've ever had the pleasure of smoking... U can see my lil setup if u go to my current album on my profile and see how Im flowering my babies, right now... I'd say go for it, full steam ahead! As long as your temps and hum is in check, the more lumens and wider the spectrum, the better... I even have mine timed to where each "morning", the HPS's come on for the first three hours, mimicing sunrise, and then three hours in, the MH's come on with the HPS's still burning, mimicing mid-late day, and then six hours later, the MH's shut off, mimicing sunset, with only the HPS's until "night", again... But, the last two weeks, I let em all go the full 12 hour on period... So, it's up to you... But anything this well-thought out, and in my case, tested over and over again, is definately worth trying... Call it reinventing the wheel if u want, but using MH during flowering increases trichome production because of the UV radiation they emit, which triggers the plant's natural "defense" mechanism, producing more resin, to better coat and protect the leaves and flowers... It's science, not a just a good idea...

But, the answer to your question, after my rambling, is yes... I would venture to say that it would be beneficial to your flowering beauties to integrate the smaller MH into your lighting schedule at this point... I put my rep on it, that it'll be the shizznit!!! You will most certainly see more explosive trich production if you do this, which is a good thing...

I run 4 1000 watt hps and 2 1000 mh above 12 plants in each of my flower rooms and have great results... better I'm sure than just the hps alone.

Everyone has an opinion.

Some say MH for veg HPS for flower.

Others say HPS the whole time, and even others say MH the whole time.

Then of course there's the mixed spectrum option. I don't do it, but it seems to make sense.

Thanks to all for the great information. You all have been very helpful and I thank you for your time. I will be adding another 600w MH to the flower children and let you know the results.

Special thanks to GG420 for laying out his schedule and lighting in such detail.
