How long have you had those jars? Are you planing the ole "dunk and roll" or are you going a different route?

they didnt colonize completely. the jars ive done turn to be all white mycelia. ive herd that they wil fruit early if there is a contam in the jar since the mycelia cannot colonize over that part. but dont know how correct that is. still only on my first grow. maybe canndo can confirm or correct this. i also heard that if you fruit a jar that isnt fully colonized it can get contamed easier in the fruiting chamber. i would maybe use smaller jars. i use the 4 oz jars. most people use half pint you have the pint. faster colonization.

dunk and roll is when you birth your cake rinse it and submerge it under water for around 24 hours. and then rinse it again and roll it in some verm. then put it in your fruiting chamber.

The dunk and roll essentially is when you dunk your colonized cake underwater for 24 hours. Then you roll it in vermiculate. And then you put it in your fruiting chamber. It seems like a good beginners way of doing things, but it isn't. For the same amount of time and energy, and probably less chance of contamination. You could go with a casing. Instead of me explaining it. You can search this site for "mushroom casing", or search google for "mushroom casing". What can I say? I'm kinda lazy. Besides I would go with the casing. If you at least have casing materials around, or access to them.

Another reason I hate PF tek, you never are sure you have complete colonization and you have to wait until the mycelium grows sometimes inches in order to get full growth. If you were growing on loose substrate you wouldn't have that problem as you could shake the jars in order to have each particle completely engulfed - I have seen full growth in as little as 4 days (from lc). Don't worry about the size of your jars but about the substrate itself, it is far easier to toss some grain in there than to mix a powder with vermiculite.

I don't know if it will fruit early due to contams, could be. If you put ungrown medium in a non-sterile place such as your fruiting chamber, you will get contamination, it doesn't matter what else it is growing. Cook up some rice for instance, cover it with plastic wrap and leave it on your kitchen counter - you will get blue, green, grey and white mold in a few days - that is simply the way of things.

ill have to try that tek the next time i knock some jars up. i had to wait a while for my jars to be done.

I know. I've been promoting the hell outta it. But one suggestion may be the "popcorn tek". The popcorn may be more easily accessible to you than the other grains, easier to prepare, and not as malty or easily contaminated as wild bird seed. Something to think about.

Tip, always drop the spore solution against the glass on the inside of the jar, so it can run to the bottom, as oposed to squirting it on top of the medium. Maintain a nice tropical temperature, if you have alot of growth on one side of a container, drop it on the side with the uncolonised stuff pointing to the top.

I'm glad ANC mentioned the temp. Since I live in the NE. I believe fluctuating temps may be linked to my slow colonization rates.

Letting the fruits grow inside the jar is not ideal but it's not the worst thing. There's actually a word for it, "in-vitro" and it's good if you're doing this stealthy because you can just skip the fruiting chamber. Over at Mycotopia.net they call it Hippie Tek or Neglect Tek:

The reason the jars are not fully colonized is maybe because he didn't mix the flour and vermiculite well as that's a common first timers mistake. I wouldn't feel bad about this. Enjoy the gifts of nature you have there and figure out how to do it better next time.
