preppers on here got a question

Actually, I haven't followed closely enough to read about the Guide Gun, but it stands to reason. Until I can afford a slightly-pre-owned hammerless sidelock double rifle (pref. by Purdy or H&H) in . 450 or .470, however ... ~grin~ cn

<edit> side-by-side, of course.

The big doubles are a " Case Gun" , meaning much better in the case than in reality. More followup with the Guide Gun and one HELL of a lot less investment.

And prior to purchasing one go watch someone shoot one , I was stupid and didn't , I might have fired 25 rounds out of the thing in 5 years , and that was just in .450 Nitro Express much less the .470s and up. Sold the damn thing for more than I paid for it and counted myself lucky.

I actually did watch a guy at the range with a .470 double. Owie! "You should be here when I bring the .600", he said. "Uh, no", I thought.

I have a soft spot for "pretty" guns. cn

Thanks for the info Ronin.

How's this for bear defense lol

That'll work as long as it feeds reliably , the majority of DE's I've seen and shot were pretty fair as regards that , and the .44s and .50 aes perform well on hogs , I've seen both used.

Nice sidearm , real nice.

Yeah just the .450 was enough for me , and I'm not really unduly sensitive to recoil , I regularly put a 100 round downrange out 7mm mags in a session without a flinch and the .375 rum doesn't bother me , but that .450 was a whole 'nuther realm even though on a ftlb level it's not all that much more than the .375 in output the whack is in a completely different realm.

If you ever decide you want one , and a *really* "pretty" one , take a look at what these folks offer , and the website doesn't even do justice to the up close quality , these are true gunmakers Art.

Don't have a coronary at the prices though , I'm a cheap bastard so I'll never own one but they sure are pretty.

By the way , check Cabelas sometimes they have the CZs and/or Sabbatis at decent prices believe it or not. They carry Krieghoffs too but if you're going to spend that much just buy a Blaser instead.

Hey roninamok, I'm thinking about getting a Glock23 .40 cal as my primary defense pistol, and a Winchester model 70 chambered in .308. Any concerns about these guns? I am also leaning towards a mossberg 500 for my 12 gauge, but maybe a 590. I currently have enough firepower to hold off a small attack but know the need for reliability and accuracy. Other suggestions would be great

may as well pistolwhip the bear with that thing and save on ammo

How's the recoil? I've never shot anything close to a .50

Also, I'm still a noob with regards to firearms in general but I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for a reloading kit? I want to make my own bullets.

I knew a guy who accurized the hell out of an SKS in 7.62x39. I was at the range sighting in a new scope, and we got to talking about our guns.. It had russian side-mount optics, and I have no idea what he did in total to the rifle, but it was better than 1/4moa, maybe pushing 1/8moa. I know, CRAZY TALK, but I swear to God I've never been so accurate.. I was enlarging my first shot and kept putting them through the same hole. And that was at 100 yards. My M1A I've accurized to about 1/2moa, without bedding the stock... Felt good to be able to hit a half-inch target at 100 yards repeatedly after I sighted it in, with a semiauto.. But damn, nowhere close to how well his SKS shot. I have to wonder if you can get that kind of accuracy from an AK.. or if there are sniper variants of them.

The mossberg is of course a good bet in any permutation. And Model 70s , I've got several in the safe from mild to wild , I actually prefer the Model 70 , the Savages , the 788 and the preGarcia Sakos to a Model 700 rem , I won't keep a 700 fo a variety of reasons , including the stock trigger.

Glocks.............I'm the wrong person to ask..............stick solely to ammunition loaded to the factory across the counter specs and you should be ok , start stoking 'em and chance are you'll blow the thing up as they don't support the case head properly, this little problem can of course be fixed by the likes of a BarSto barrel but then you're enough into it money wise to be in good used Sig Territory.......

Me I wouldn't by a Glock , but then I handload and tend to like to experiment , so my opinion is a bit skewed. If I were you I'd take a *real* close look at the Springfield Xds and the like , the Taurus offerings , the CZs ( be sure to take a look at the CZs) and the Rugers prior to buying a Glock. That's in the midrange , up from that there's a HELL of a lot of offerings......actually the SIGS are a really good value for what you actually get and they're still all metal excpet for the new one.

If you go with a 1911 pattern stay away from the Colts , go Springfield........

Here ya go.......start here................take a look at the Lee Hand Presses , minimal investment way to get started.Be aware that it's not just the press you need , you also need scale , tumbler ,case trimmer etc.etc. Start minimal in case it's not your cup of tea. That way you don't have a lot invested if you don't like it.

And DO NOT rely on just ONE manual , collect as many of them as you can. Data changes and it varies from maker to maker.

I have no doubt that you think you saw what you saw , However if you had measured it would have enlightened you. Trust me on this when I say it wasn't shooting under a quarter minute of angle. A brand new McMillan competition bench rifle chucked up in a Ransom Rest will *maybe* shoot a 1/4 minute.........

I thank you for making my point though , a lot of rifles are slagged off as "this n that compared to ARs" , you just named 2 of 'em and while an m1a is pricey the SKS is still relatively cheap.

On that M1a , stick to 168 grain and under loadings or you will at some point damage various things , the 155 grain Palma loadings have worked right well for me........

Believe it or not I actually *prefer* the M1 Garand , I'm not real big on detachable mags , I actually like the stripper clips and you can carry a lot more ammunition and I prefer '06 to .308 though ballistically and powerwise it's a tossup. Another for folks to look at that's a ***screaming deal*** in the marketplace right now are the various Mosin-Nagants if someone desires a bolt gun , yeah they're crude but they're also stone reliable and 7.62 x 54r falls squarely in between .308 and .30-06 and they are CHEAP , for under 300 buck yiou can end up with the rifle AND two of the 440 round cans of surplus junk eastern bloc ammunition , and if you handload you can tailor it to do anything the other two cartridges can do.........and then there is the PSL ...which is NOT a Dragunov.............

And the PSL pretty much *is* the sniper variant , just in a much better cartridge for the purpose , and PSL's are remarkably accurate for an autoloader , especially considering the price point.

Cool man thanks for the info. I'm probably going to go with a Model 70 for sure. As far as the pistols go I have been thinking about a springfeild XD but wasnt sure on their reliability. I want a .40 that will last me a lifetime with minimal maintenance. Thanks for your 2 cents.

I would love a 1911 but don't have that kind of flow right now, .45 is what I really want but need to train my fiancee first

The XD is a solid firearm and so is the M&P. I'd say these two are the best guns for the money right now. Reliability isn't an problem with either of these. I'm a lefty so I'm biased toward the XD because of the rear safety. If you really want a .45, you can always get a fugly Hi-Point. Downsides to hi-point is they are heavy, ugly, and big. However, their cheap, reliable, and accurate. I rather get a cheap gun now then have no gun.

I shoot .45 out of a carbine and with hot loads I can get up to 1200 fps which is nuts for a .45 and I feel very very little recoil. The only problem with .45 is the price and occasional ammo shortages. 9mm is always available since it's a NATO round. To get around this problem I just reload my own ammo. Also just about every city has used tire shops. They usually throw away their wheel weights, but you can talk to them and usually they'll give them to you for free. You can then melt them down and use the lead for ammo.

Reloading isn't hard, but don't smoke or be high while you do it. Gun powder is no joke. Here's my turret reloading press. it's a Lee and I love it. :)

mild winter, mild summer is how it seems to me. plant potatoes in tires or somethin' for emergency grub. you can dehydrate them if ya don't use them.

I bought this chicken coop & a couple of chickens from craigslist. We now get fresh eggs every day!

Also, I've been cooking 1 or 2 meals a week in our "Sport Solar Oven". Works great, I highly recommend one of these for a survival tool.
Good luck boys!
